I can't speak for Michael, but I doubt it. I've used both USE and PUT with
Merlin for the Commodore 64 for source that was too large to fit in memory
at once. At the time there was no REL available, ie., USE and PUT both
pre-date versions of Merlin that also had REL. The main drawback was greatly
reduced assembly speed versus in-memory assembly, a problem emphasized on
the C64 by its slow drive transfer rates. An unexpected advantage was that
use of PUT made it reasonable to divide source modules by purpose, rather
than have everything in one big file.

Merlin for the C128 did have REL, and I did play around with it. The main
advantage of REL over PUT is assembly speed. Once a REL file is created it
doesn't need to be assembled again to be incorporated into a project, unlike
a PUT file, which is re-assembled from scratch every time it is used.

Just my $0.02.
