Hi everyone,

I've been working on the above and found a couple of anomalies en-route
because it is written on Unix machines in old-fashioned K & R.

With -W specified it now compiles without any messages and runs fine on a
BB-XM, but I experienced a couple of hiccups en route.

I eventually managed to get the library requirements down to just the
straight clib stubs, but a previous attempt with both clib and TCPIPlibs
always left two intractable linker errors, suggesting the functions 'ioctl'
and 'read' were not found in the library - with the line reference of the
library header file where these functions are defined, <dirent.h> I think.

Because of the Unix origin, the source is full of 0x0d carriage returns
(200-odd K of them) which I removed en-masse.
When the Norcroft comes across these at preprocessor continuation
backslashes it goes absolutely mental with top-level errors from all over
the place.

My version is quite old (can't seem to find the old CD carton to get the
upgrade discount) at 5.34, and I was wondering whether anyone knows if the
newer version has these anomalies fixed.

I also tried with GCC 4/1/1 but kept getting the message 'Buffer overflow'
for long lists of input files - about 5-6 lines worth in a Zap window.

I don't think so. I compiled a couple of source files some months ago
and had the same problem. I think I was using the latest version of
Norcroft, but it may have been the one previous. I had to remove all
the preprocessor \ continuations and convert them back to long single
lines before the compiler was happy.

You need to change source to use calls to socketioctl and socketread
when using TCPIPlibs.

It's due to a name clash with the file versions of ioctl() and read()
as RISC OS doesn't have a unified file/socket handle model.

Thank you druck, that's very concise and understandable.

Cheers
Howard
