HELP

Since my transfer to fibre I am having difficulty with email and news.
!Popstar is taking ages to get a connection, though Email does seem to be
working once it has made connection. However !Newshound says "resolving"
for ages and I have seen only a couple posts from uk.religion.christian,
which is usually quite busy. I fetch news via newsauth.orpheusnet.co.uk

I have tried sending a post to comp.sys.acorn.apps three times and it
fails to appear, I hope this gets through, and I can see any replies.

Richard Brown did ask me to check my settings but they remain unchanged. Is
there something I need to change to get it all working properly?

the computer I use for the internet these days is a Raspberry Pi 4 (Riscos
Bits "Fourtress") so has not been around that long.
I have checked the internet configuration, and this is what I see:

Routing:
Gateway 192.168.0.1
Act as IP router unticked
Run RouteD unticked
Routes file All lines begin with#

Host name RISCOSpi
Local domain Blank
Primary name server Blank
Try name server to unticked
Hosts file # in front of all lines except loopback 127.0.0.1
secondary name server Blank
Tertiary name server Blank
Resolver Acorn

Open Configuration => Network => Internet => Interfaces.
What does Configure say?
What does Status show?

Also, what upload and download speed does your router show?

Was your router changed as part of the upgrade?
If unchanged, presumably some changes were made to the router settings
and connections?

Interface: Broadcom GENET
Obtain IP address via DHCP
(This is fixed in router by binding MAC address to IP address)

> What does Status show?

IP address 192.168.0.12
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Hardware address E4:5F:01:58:30:21

Gateway 192.168.0.1

Transmit frames 58,448
Transmit errors 0
Recieve frames 735,306
Receive errors 0

Not sure how to find that.

Yes, router unchanged, router upgrade carried out along with some changes.
I have emailed Richard about my situation but I've not had a reply. I
think lots of people changing over is keeping him quite busy

I am rather relieved that this post made it through, and I am able to see
replies, I don't know why my posts to "apps" aren't getting through

Your posts to apps *are* getting through. I've lost count of how many times
you've asked for the Serenade manual.

Three, and that's interesting, because I've not seen them here, or any
comments or replies, so I concluded they weren't getting through.

This is less than clear.

In my previous reply, I forgot to mention that the changes to the router
were made in advance of the changeover, and all was well until after the
C/O had happened

People may be interested , and pleased, to know this problem has now been
resolved, following the following conversation with Richard Brown

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Me: Quote

> The symptoms all seem to boil down to a DNS issue.I Know you made all
> sort of changes and up grades to the router, is it possible that these
> may have caused this issue.

Richard: Quote

Hi Stuart

No is the short/long answer the router works in the same way. You are
with a different provider so the DNS is different but is automatically
picked up by the router which then directs the traffic as previously. I
am unfamiliar in how RISC OS Bits sets up there computers and what mix
of software that they include. Have you checked with them about this? I
can't help you on your local machine as I have never worked with that
manufacturer. I think you will find that somewhere some settings are not
correct. Everything has worked correctly for my other customers using
RISC OS with our new supplier.

A second email from Richard

Hi Stuart

just a quick follow up for you I have re-checked through all the
settings I changed when I prepared your router and everything for DNS is
as it should be and was before. I really am scratching my head over what
to suggest to you. Might be worth while just closing everything down and
then powering up router followed by computers and see if that makes a
difference. I almost wish you just couldn't fetch mail it would be
quicker to fix I am sure.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, all computers, printers, NAS boxes etc were powered down.
The router was then turned off, and, then, following the obligatory count
to 10, re-powered. all the other hardware was then re-powered and Email
and News found to be working as expected.

In my host names window

Both primary and secondary name server are filled in with details that
came with my original set up instructions from Orpheus the server details
start 212.

After some initial problems with my router it all just worked.

I've not made any changes to the internet settings since moving to
broadband - way back when.
