Hi,

On my FAST machine I have one MimeMap in

 !Boot.Resources.!Internet.files.MimeMap

as expected.

However, on my Virtual Acorn machines there appear to be many of them.

Surely there should be only one. The poor machines must be confused.

That is the *only* one that is used, assuming variables are set...
Inet$MimeMappings : InetDBase:MimeMap
InetDBase$Path : .....!BOOT.Resources.!Internet.files.

Check the variables as above - RO4 did move things around.

Sounds like some documentation?

Probably copies of the MimeMap *module*, not the text file list.
In RO5 the module is in the ROM, not on disc.

See above for RO4

No idea. What are those files?

Thans Martin. I'll have to slowly investigate each one. I have no idea
why so many modules.

If a module version has restrictions on which versions of RISC OS it
can be used on, there can be different versions of modules in the
boot sequence. This enables the boot sequence to run on different
versions of RISC OS with the right version of module. I would leave
Modules alone, unless you are brave!

I've been constructing a lecture about the Gennett recording studio and
early jazz. I've found the audio tracks I'd like to use but they are in
various formats. I'm using OHP on RISC OS so I need to convert all to a
format RISC OS can use eg WAV. Andre Temmermans Digital CD has a list of
supported file formats so I wanted to ensure my mimemap was up to date
with the appropriate extensions/filetypes but it would be helpful if I
only needed to update whatever the main copy is on each machine, not all
the separate iterations.

So Martin has answered that one: it's the text file pointed to by
Inet$MimeMappings. Other text files will be ignored, and the system will
ensure that a suitable MimeMap module is loaded.

There's certainly no need to investigate each module, and there's probably
little benefit to checking all of the alternative mappings files -- just
because something was supplied with WebsterXL in the 00s doesn't mean that
it's correct today!

The version that comes with RISC OS 5 is probably fairly comprehensive. Tim
Hill used to maintain a "complete" file, too. There's a lot to be said for
keeping a standard set of mappings across all of your computers, so that
things don't change types when moved between them. But AFAIK the problem of
producing a definitive set of mappings has largely been sorted now, so
rolling your own seems like a lot of duplicated effort.

Quite so but I did think I spotted a couple of things in the Digital CD
which weren't in my list. No biggie. I'll investigate when I have more
time. My Round Tuitt got smashed. ;-)
