Hi,

are there some programmes for RISC OS which can provide the commands
rlocus(...,...), bode(...,...), step(...,...) or create diagrammes for
that like Matlab (for Windows) can do do? Would be helpfull to me
these days.

There was a version of RLab ported to RISC OS some time back.
I used it quite a bit and was it was pretty good for what I needed.
I couldn't say if it had the specific functions you mention, but was able  
to generate it's output as either a Drawfile or a Sprite.
Not sure where you would go looking for it these days, and it may no  
longer be maintained.
If you don't have any luck, come back to me and I'll have a look through  
some archives to see if I can find it (I use Octave on Linux these days).

It's in the PD library on the APDL web site, though it is rather old and I
suspect there hasn't been a RISC OS update for very many years.

Unfortunately the manual consists of a series of Drawfiles created from TeX
pages using a special font so it's completely unreadable without the TeX
font used.

I have a version of RLab onto my HD, but it doesn't do the job.

OK.
I found that the differences between RLab and Octave were quite minor, in  
that code for one system could be modified for the other relatively  
simply, so why not look at the Octave code for the functions you need and  
translate them into RLab functions?

Just another though...if the RLab stuff doesn't help, have you looked at  
python?
There is a port of python to RISC OS, and scipy might do a lot of the  
stuff you require, if that add-on is available/ported.

I've been wondering if anyone could be bothered to define clearly what
"rlocus()", etc, actually *do*. Knowing that might make it possible to
suggest alternatives.

I think the clue is in the names: rlocus for plotting a root locus,
bode for doing a Bode plot... Control Engineering stuff.

I did guess that 'bode' just meant plotting a bode approximation to the
real response, etc. But it wasn't clear why or how this was needed.

So if someone gives a mathematical definition, easy enough to duplicate
with almost any approach?

FWIW I asked because I've never bothered much with MatLab/Mathmatica/etc. I
just write what is required in 'C' or whatever seems appropriate. Then use
!DrawGen or !Tau if I want a graphic. However I can see that some very
complicated functions would be easier using a more 'high level' system.

FWIW2 I've often found that when someone asks you how to do "X", if you ask
them to explain why, and what they are *really* trying to do, it turns out
that their real requirement is something else. Often more easily acheived
some other way. The only way to tell is to have an explanation.

Sorry you didn't understand the rest of what I wrote in my earlier posting.
But the point was to clarify if something quite different might actually
serve the OP's actual requirement. And maybe give others who *don't* follow
the page reference to see if they could help. I can't tell that from the
above page since it tells us nothing about the OP's case. Hence this being
on usenet, and us not answering all questions with a lazy "use google".

Absolutely.  But people who might consider spending their time answering
those questions might be much more inclined to do so if the OP has shown
some evidence of looking in the obvious place first AND then explaining why
the info in the obvious place isn't adequate.  It saves everyone else time.

The answer to the first sentence is at least initially provided by the
reference page I provided the link to.  It was easily locatable by you and
by anyone else thinking of spending their valuable time replying to your
post.  

The point I'm making is that it's not clear whether the info on that page is
sufficient to answer what you were asking.  Suppose you'd replied instead by
saying:

  I see there's an explanation of the use of 'rlocus' on <url>.
  I wonder if ... <whatever>

Yes I thought it might be. 

It seems to me that what you really wanted to know /wasn't what rlocus etc
'actually do'/ not least because your "Yes, it is pretty much what I'd have
expected." comment above suggests you already know what rlocus does.  

I think you wanted to know how what the OP's data described and what he
wanted to determine, so you could (perhaps) suggest some other mathematical
technique to determine that.  But it's not what you asked.
