Virgil,
use Apply:
In[1]:= Apply[f, {4, 1, 1}]
Out[1]= f[4, 1, 1]
It also has an abbreviation: @@
In[2]:= f @@ {4, 1, 1}
Out[2]= f[4, 1, 1]
