Seems to work fine for me.  I've also got a CDF embedded into a
webpage, which you can examine here:
http://facstaff.unca.edu/mcmcclur/CDF/CDF.html

It sounds like you might have just the "CDF browser plugin" installed
but not the CDF Player.  As I understand it, the browser plugin is
basically a front end that works with the user's web browser but you
still need a kernel, which is supplied by CDF player.
