I'm doing an informal survey on standard input and standard output in different programming languages. In many languages these streams are char based and you cannot read or write a byte off them. In Common Lisp it depends on the implementation. What is the state of play with your preferred language? Mark

Anything can be written into a text file, the encoding is presumed to be Latin-1. Since all 8-bit are available in Latin-1 it does not really matter what you actually write into [*] ---------------- * Ada's text I/O was designed when OSes respected encoding and formatting.
