What does "exponential progress" mean?

When, once, reference was made to a statesman almost universally
recognized as one of the villains of this century, in order to
induce him to a negative judgment, he replied: "My situation is
so different from his, that it is not for me to pass judgment".

I had to look that one up. It's an abbreviation of an anti-Semitic
slogan. Only an idiot would be anti-Semitic, and I don't read articles
by idiots, so you're going right into the bozo bin. Bye now.

I had to look it up too.

How about this for a plan? We report Peter to Google for anti-Semitism
and hate posts, so that Google removes this group from Google Groups (as
it has done with comp.lang.c, comp.lang.forth, and various other groups
because of google-groups morons posting banned drivel). That won't ban
Peter - google's bans are not well targeted. But it /will/ have the
effect of getting rid of both Amine and Kristjan, who are the real
PITA's in this group.

It's tempting, but (a) I would be compromising a principle that I hold
dear - free speech - and (b) it would be tantamount to acknowledging
Google Groups as de facto moderators of this newsgroup, which was around
long before they were and over which they have no authority whatsoever.

Google (and Google Groups) are not moderators of the group, but they
/are/ moderators of who gets to post to the group via their interface
(just as eternal-september.org can limit our postings). They have
shirked that responsibility and invariably ignore all complaints about
abuse of Usenet groups - except that now they seem to be throwing babies
out with the bathwater for certain complaints.

Free speech needs some limits, and it is entirely reasonable to block
posts espousing dangerous conspiracy theories concerning Covid, which
someone had posted to c.l.c. It is, of course, utterly /unreasonable/
to block that entire group from google groups. Lots of people are happy
to see google groups spammers and nutjobs disappear, but there were some
sensible people who used gg too. And google's blocking of groups makes
their archives far harder to find and search, which is unforgivable.
