The better alternative is SSH, but Telnet is still fairly useful with
Linux-based devices, including desktop PCs, router firmware, Arduino and
Raspberry Pi.

Window$ has Telnet as well, though their users seldom use it.

Would you /please/ stop cross-posting to such inappropriate groups? If
you have a programming question, post it to comp.programming - if you
want to talk about conspiracy theory, post to alt.conspiracy. All the
other groups you follow have their own topics. Make your posts in the
right groups for the subject you are discussing, not random selections!

Thought Telnet could be a programming tool.... Anyway, tuning my logic! ;)

No, telnet is not a programming tool. Nor is it a conspiracy theory,
freeware, Ubuntu software, Windows 7 software or Windows 10 software
(even though there are telnet implementations available freely, Ubuntu
has both clients and servers in its repositories, and Windows has a crap
version with its OS).

Look it up on Wikipedia, then don't get back to us about it - anyone
else who wants to know what Telnet actually is can look it up there too.

When someone makes a post in a Usenet group, it may or may not be on
topic for that original group. But it is almost always an annoyance to
everyone when someone cross-posts a reply to a half-dozen other groups.
Reply to posts if you have something useful to say, but for the sake of
the entire Usenet community, stop adding new groups to the replies.

Just FYI: The word "telnet" appeared in a post in alt.conspiracy, and
hence the reference.

Some topics cross multiple academic disciplines. I believe Usenet was
originally a news network for universities. Limited cross-posting should
be expected, when someone wanna reach out for more help from users of
different backgrounds.

If the first post was made in that group, keep the replies there.

Believe what you want - but keep your beliefs to yourself. Almost every
post I see from you in various newsgroups is off-topic, and it is
usually in that group because you have inappropriately cross-posted a reply.

Yes, many posts could reasonably be said to be on-topic in more than one
group. No, that does not mean that it is a good idea to cross-post
them. And it certainly does not mean that it is a good idea to randomly
cross-post to a bunch of unrelated groups. Please stop doing it!

You should stop those politics crap cross-posting first.

See you later in a more interesting discussion should it happen. :)

Is INN still being updated? I thought all work had stopped. Not sure
about other NNTP server software.

To manage cross-posting and off-topic posts programmatically, someone
has to add codes to those old programs?

But Usenet is basically an endangered spiece, compared to web-based
forums. Even Micro$oft has stopped using Usenet.

That may explain why only politics and their cross-posting are left in
Usenet!  :)

'Even Microsoft'?
Man you are daft, they never liked the freedom Usenet gives nor have
they ever managed to write an RFC compatible application for it.

     This started from a former regular of alt.conspiracy posting. He
commented that he would, from now on, only be on telnet://. His post
was sent to alt.conspiracy only. Why Chang is COMPELLED to cross post,
and to do so to groups that are not relevant, is a bit of a mystery.

No, he won't. Mr Chang is not noted for his community spirit.

ObProgramming:

Today I cobbled together the following code:

#include <math.h>

#define R(x) ((int)(((x) & 0xFF0000UL) >> 16))
#define G(x) ((int)(((x) & 0xFF00UL) >> 8))
#define B(x) ((int)((x) & 0xFFUL))

static double colour_distance(unsigned long ca, unsigned long cb)
{
   int rd = R(ca) - R(cb);
   int gd = G(ca) - G(cb);
   int bd = B(ca) - B(cb);
   return sqrt(rd * rd + gd * gd + bd * bd);
}

(and a driver, of course) to demonstrate that Mark Knight's tennis
cartoon was not, as people were trying to make out, using colour to
further racist stereotypes.

It was mildly interesting because, including the driver, it was 36 lines
long, it compiled correctly first time, and it worked first time. That's
a long way from being my record, but it's probably the longest this year
for which I could make that claim.

Chang is an annoying idiot who posts nothing of any value. He has been
nicely asked not to cross-post many times (including more than once by
me) but simply doesn't listen. Best, IMHO, to just ignore his drivel.

Computer technology has matured to the point that it's hard for anyone
