Hello... Read this: The Asian Advantage: "Richard Nisbett, a professor of psychology who has written an excellent book about intelligence, cites a study that followed a pool of Chinese-American children and a pool of white children into adulthood. The two groups started out with the same scores on I.Q. tests, but in the end 55 percent of the Asian-Americans entered high-status occupations, compared with one-third of the whites. To succeed as a manager, whites needed an I.Q. of 100, while Chinese-Americans needed an I.Q. of only 93. So the Asian advantage, Nisbett argues, isn’t intellectual firepower as such, but how it is harnessed. Some disagree, but I’m pretty sure that one factor is East Asia’s long Confucian emphasis on education. Likewise, a focus on education also helps explain the success of Jews, who are said to have had universal male literacy 1,700 years before any other group." Are you just afraid of competing, let's say in a bigger league? Enjoy, ed

It is known that there are cultural biases in IQ tests. Also, I would not call it "Asian Advantage" since the study was specifically of Chinese-American children. There are many other asian countries and cultures. Lastly, based on experience, immigrants from China are a very selective pool. China is loosening its emigration rules, but essentially mainly the best of the best make it to the USA. Intelligence, motivation, driven parents, and yes an educational culture all contribute to the success of these children. This seems to be in the context of why don't Blacks have similar success. For Chinese-American children the author, Nicholas Kristof, points to this: "Some disagree, but I’m pretty sure that one factor is East Asia’s long Confucian emphasis on education." [again he confuses Chinese with other Asian cultures] Same paragraph continues: "Likewise, a focus on education also helps explain the success of Jews, who are said to have had universal male literacy 1,700 years before any other group." Since this article is apparently in the context of racial inequality in America, lets consider black culture. In the American continent, Black culture began with a slave culture for about 200 years. Then for another 100 years or so was the "Jim Crow" culture. Even after the civil rights advances of the 1960's, a part of white culture continues to denigrate blacks. So in that context, do you really expect black Americans to succeed at the same rates as new immigrants? Amine, I am not sure of your motivations for posting this article. I hope it was just to add posting fodder to an old (maybe dying) newsgroup. (You did get my response.) So unless you can show some reason this fits into comp.programming, I am hoping this thread dies soon. Ed
