Anyone know how a desktop programmer can start learning how to program motors? Like maybe servos and such? The only motors in the desktop are the fan, the CD spinner, and the old hard drive… none of which you have much control over.

Field-bus protocols? RT-programming? Devices? cbb software GmbH sells CATS kits for teaching purposes: http://www.cbb.de/produkte/control-and-automation-training-system-cats/ http://www.cbb.de/fileadmin/templates/v1/Downloads/Technische_Informationen/cats_user_guide.pdf CATS can be used with for direct programming control loops up to 5ms tight (under Windows). You can program it in almost any conventional language e.g. in Ada, C, C#, C++, Delphi, VB. If you have MATLAB/Simulink or LabView these can be used as well. -- Regards, Dmitry A. There is "Jones on Stepping Motors" at http://homepage.cs.uiowa.edu/~jones/step/ It's quite good. Has circuit examples and pseudo code.

Well, it depends on what you plan to do with your motors. Servo motors, stepper motors, DC motors etc.. don't have the same application field. It also depends on what level you want to control them. Servos for instance are controlled by a PWM signal at hardware level, but you can find electronic boards allowing you to do that from a much higher level. For instance: http://www.yoctopuce.com/EN/products/usb-actuators/yocto-servo http://www.phidgets.com/products.php?category=11
