#2839 — Copying of Alternate Data Streams

SubjectCopying of Alternate Data Streams
Message-ID<50f7d32c$0$17946$4fafbaef@reader1.news.tin.it>
Hello,

I read that ADS (Alternate Data Streams) are still supported in
Windows 8.

Will copying files with Windows Explorer preserve Alternate Data Streams
(in Windows 8)?
Will copying files with applications which do Windows API calls (for
file-copying) preserve Alternate Data Streams (in Windows 8)? (One
example would be SyncBack backup software.)

I think both answers are "yes" (for NTFS volumes), but would like to ask
to be sure. I'm using Windows 8 Pro 64bit (but there should be no
difference between different Windows 8 versions, right?)

Thanks,

Thomas

They are, at least on NTFS volumes, just like in prior versions. Note
that ReFS does *not* support ADSs.

And how were they in prior versions?
Copying with preserving of Alternate Data Streams was supported both by
Windows Explorer and Windows API calls?
And there is no difference between Windows "sub-versions" (e.g.
Professional, Home, etc.).
I'm sorry for asking again, but would like to feel sure.
Thanks,

Thomas

Sorry, this should have been a question:
"And there is no difference between Windows "sub-versions" (e.g.
Professional, Home, etc.)?"

Regards,

Thomas

There doesn't seem to be any changes since it was first introduced in
Windows NT 3.1.

Depends on how the file is copied. The shell including Windows Explorer,
are ADFS aware and will presere them when copying. Windows API that can
copy file in a single function are mostly ADFS aware. Such as
SHFileOperation, CopyFile, and CopyFileEx. Manual file copy using
FileOpen, FileRead, FileWrite, etc. are not ADFS aware as they
specifically chose which stream to access when opening the file. Note
that in Windows, ADFS is strictly NTFS only. ADFS will not be preserved
when file is being copied accross network since the system do not have
control over the internal file-system of the storage on the other side of
peer. There is no Windows API specifically for this and only by client-
server based custom program these can be achieved. Check the MSDN library
for each file function you want to use for any limitation.

For ADFS, no difference.

CopyFile() and Explorer do copy ADS's.
