If you were going to make an e-mail client like Thunderbird, what would be the most sensible data structure to store the messages in on the hard drive?

Thanks.

How much like Thunderbird does it need to be? Thunderbird stores them
in the mbox format.

I think the messages in ThunderBird may be stored in the file global-messages-db.sqlite.

That file is 291.4MB on my PC. I don't see any other big files in ThunderBird territory on my PC.

Thanks.

Store the raw messages in mbox format, then add an index using e.g. SQLite
so that you can search/order by date/subject/sender/etc and retrieve
individual messages quickly.

Storing the raw messages allows for easy migration to/from other clients,
other versions of the client, other OSes, etc, as well as the option to
rebuild the index from scratch if it gets corrupted.

Not exactly a data structure, but if you're going to store emails then the
Maildir method is the obvious choice.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maildir

That, along with a model-view-controller to implement any abstraction that
you require for your UI, is by far the best way to go store emails.

Yeah, I used to use a format like that for a free e-mail service.

I remember the day when the service exceeded about 32767 users. Nobody new could sign up because the ext2 filesystem seemed to have a limit of 32767 subdirectories of a dir.

What were you doing to need 32767 users on a single email client configured to run on a single
user account?

It wasn't a single email client or a single user account.

Each user just had their own directory, which was a subdirectory of
/coolmail/users.
