So, I guess Yahoo bought some app called Summly from some kid.

Can someone help me understand this and what the app did?

Did it really do any sophisticated AI? Or was there some ulterior motive behind all this?

Thanks.

Apparently it is a text mining application

  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Text_mining
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_D%27Aloisio (see the Summly section)

The thing that surprises me is why a big company (with lots of clever people
as resources) paid for the app rather than writing a competitor app itself.

They were probably buying the name/audience/reputation etc. rather
than the app itself. How much marketing would it have taken to
generate the audience? On-line it is very important to be there
first. Summly had that, while anything Yahoo could have developed
never would.
