#4193 — Prevent overwriting files on FTP (need a Linux program)

I use Debian Linux.

I edit files on an FTP server. I need to be warned when somebody else have
written a file in order me not to overwrite it. Which software should I use
for it? (Now I use Kate through FTP and it does NOT warn about modified
files on the server.)

I have also filed feature request for Kate to do the same, but you know it
will pass much time until my request will be fulfilled in my Debian jessie.

In the past I used Komodo Editor which does warn about files modified on an
FTP server. Maybe should I switch back to Komodo? However, I'd prefer to
somehow do it with Kate (maybe eiditing it).

Then what do you do with your changes?

Multiple people concurrently updating files is solved by version control.

Instead of a FTP directory you have a shared repo, which handles situations
of changes to the same file (possibly conflicting ones).

Kate is open source, right? You can patch it yourself.

If I see there may ve overwrites, I could resolve the problem manually. The
trouble is to know when there are conflicts, not how to resolve them.

Yes I know...

... but version control software is not installed on our server :-( I am not
the admin neither have root password to solve this problem myself.

Since this is comp.programming, we have programming tools.

Manually resolving conflicts is a decades-old approach belonging in the 1960's.
(By 1970's, we had version control.)

Use distributed version control among yourselves; and synchronize from an
off-server master repo to the files on the server. You can have more control
this way about what goes "live" and when.
