What is the best general strategy for having software that automatically updates? Is it to have a separate executable that runs on startup and compares the current software version with the latest version every 10 minutes?

Use SaaS instead of Apps. In other words, if your "software" is a web-site, then the users will always have the latest version. Though, to answer your question more faithfully, I've seen many programs that have an "auto-update" feature, which will check for a newer version, and download it, asking the user for permission to upgrade.
