I would certainly agree that the 8-bit byte is a de facto standard. But the existence of a standard does not imply universal conformance. Nor does it help us to understand the historical context of the term. I find it curious that many people are determined to restrict the term "byte" to mean "exactly eight bits", when doing so (a) makes the term redundant (because we already have "octet" to mean "exactly eight bits"), and (b) hampers our ability to describe alternative computer architectures. What advantage does this restriction give us that compensates for the loss of flexibility? -- Richard Heathfield Email: rjh at cpax dot org dot uk "Usenet is a strange place" - dmr 29 July 1999 Sig line 4 vacant - apply within
