For that to work, surely Microsoft would have to send context from
your documents, which would include details of what your current
project is, to LinkedIn.

If so, I wonder how many companies would be happy for their privacy
to be compromised in that way ?

Simon.

A poke around the Office 365 Wiki brought me to Yammer, which MS bought
in 2012, and subsequently announced (2914) were moving into Office 365.

A lot of folks seem blind to it. Convenience trumps privacy...

I stopped using Office when it became a "cloud" package. Of course,
now, if I had subscribed, I would be screwed because of my being
limited to only the Internet I can get on a smartphone. :-)

I see more and more businesses moving to things like Open Office.
I never did and I certainly don't trust Microsoft today.

OpenOffice is where Microsoft Office goes to die.

Use LibreOffice instead.

Sorry, I never really saw the difference. Just shows how all the
infighting is damaging the open source movement and keeping that
great big grin on Bill Gates face.

If you never saw the difference, then you never used it much.

And I've seen so many of them wish they had VMS back. Or be
pleasantly surprised to see me using VMS.

Make that two commands--build and run. Emacs is always open in a separate window. :)

If a developer doesn't know what's important, what the main purpose of computers
and applications is, then in my opinion he / she is a rather worthless developer.

Anyone listening to such people is being set up for a fall ....

Is that by measuring the discounted cost of continuing to run the legacy system, as opposed to the total cost?

Does your company consider IT to be a strategic asset, or just an unavoidable expense?

And then you wonder why you are losing customers to more nimble, more up-to-date competitors...

Every time I heard this marketing type stuff, I am reminded to post the
following story on Jurassic Programmers: (from 2008, it is a timeless lesson
as to why one needs to focus on the business and not the technology of
the day)

Can you point to even one instance when a company, mfg, distributor, and such,
has lost any customers because they continue to use VMS?

IT is ALWAYS an expense ....

IT can be a strategic asset ....

Being a strategic asset is mostly about the applications, not the OS. But, in
fairness, I will admit that while not a part of the OS, SSL issues are causing
some problems with being a strategic asset this month.

The answer to your question might be "who is here?"

Probably not the users of applications. They have their job, and then they want
nothing to do with their job when they leave for the day.

Possibly developers, system managers, and the like is who participate in this
venue. People much more likely to use DCL, and need to do unique things.

It was Henry Ford who said, if he had asked his customers what they wanted, they would have replied, “a faster horse”.

John - good article - thx.

Extract -
"Henry Ford looked at problems people actually had, and came up with
new solutions that people couldn’t articulate or conceive of."

Ayup. Though it does appear that DVCS is an area that you cannot
articulate nor conceive of. Or that you prefer to disbelieve the
usefulness of the tools. Given that OpenVMS isn't particularly good
at accessing a DVCS — yes, jgit or the Python Hg bits — unfamiliarity
with these tools and these approaches is not a huge surprise, though.
Windows (Visual Studio) and macOS (Xcode) both integrate with git, so
that's a little more natural for developers working with those tools on
those platforms, and there are command-line and other GUI tools
available. I don't know off-hand if eCube NXTware or the old Netbeans
bits for OpenVMS integrate with git.
