TDMS was ported along with other products early in the porting process. I can look up the approximate time, but I recall assisting customers with TDMS applications pre-announcement.

TDMS was ported to Alpha and then to Itanium very late (~2004, IIRC),
long after the cited customer consternation had arisen.

Wasn't it like this: At first there was no port, then it was ported due
to popular demand? The same with DECnet Phase IV?

Yes, TDMS was initially retired and then got ported to Alpha. And it took some customer pressure to make it happen. IIRC the same applied for the IA64 port though it took considerably more effort.
FMS and DECforms were considered superior products.
And they may well be but DEC managed to piss off a lot of senior management in The Netherlands and more importantly in Japan.

No, it is those paying the bills and matching the cost against the value
for the site, and they know aboslutely nothing about VMS. The fact that the
current systems serves the site very well at a low cost, is the
reason the systems are still there. The fact that they run VMS doesn't
matter, as long as that fact doesn't become an issue in itself.

The risk of not beeing able to get competent people to work with the
systems is a far larger "risk" then missing file name completion.

As long as the work and cost to replace the systems is far higher then
to continuing using them, they'll stay. Byt then, we also have to show
they we can follow the stream with web interfaces and other integration
and cooperative features. File name completion is not such an feature.

I think that was the point I was trying to make. :-)

No. But if developers do not want to work on the system, you will never
get the functions, and developers usually use the command line interface.

Developing is sometimes having three fixed commands (edit, build and run)
and swapping between them with up-arrow with no line editing at all... :-)

Anyway, I can not go to my customer and saying that the support fees now
has rised becuse we now have got file name completion. That is the issue.

I don't have any easy answers. But not having developers wanting to work
on a system *is* a problem.

I don't think that you've proven that developers don't want to work on VMS. Nor
do I feel that such is or has ever been the case.

Now, what has happened in the past is that some people have thought that they
have "seen the writing on the wall", and that if they didn't move to a more
popular environment they might have a problem finding future employment. That
doesn't mean that they wanted to switch, but that they thought they HAD to switch.

I've done several environments in the past, including VMS and weendoze. So far,
VMS is still my first choice, if available.

And yes, Edit, Compile, Link, and Run gets the job done.

Today I had a call from a consultant brooker in Sweden. He had seen my
profile on LinkedIn. He had an assignment from a large swedish company
to find 10-20 VMS developers. This was not for a specific project for a
limited time but to fill current vacancies. The guy sounded desperate.

It seems as that company do not advert the VMS positions externally any
more, maybe there is no meaning, they call the jobb brookers instead.

So their is definitely no problem to find OpenVMS work but there is
some issues to find OpenVMS people to fill the vacancies. Anyway,
that didn't suit me at the moment. Too much travel...

That is the case with pretty much all technical jobs. The HR guys,
instead of doing their jobs, contract the work out to headhunters, who
bring in anyone they can find on the street.

>So their is definitely no problem to find OpenVMS work but there is

That's a lot of the problem... people familiar with OpenVMS are going to
be older people who aren't desperate. Headhunters for the most part are
used to dealing with younger people who are desperate for anything they
can get, and they and the HR people don't know how to get older technical
people.

If I were looking for support VMS systems today, I would consider getting
skilled fresh-outs and teaching them. But getting skilled fresh-outs who
want to learn an obsolete system is kind of difficult. They exist, but
they are not thick on the streets.

Worse still, they contract resume scanning out to pieces of software
that don't understand anything they read and can only see key words.
Thus, "5 years of experience" trumps "30 years maintaining Unix Systems"
because the program only looks for the word "experience".
Of course, it could be the other way around depending on what the
keyword is. And you have no way of knowing.

Which wouldn't be necessary if HR actually involved "Humans".
Applying for a job today is much more about creative writing
than actual skills.

Of course, given recent developments, in the future Clippy's likely to
pop up after the search and ask "Can I interest you in Windows 10

On a more serious note, are you allowed to say who the company is ?

First, there was a misunderstanding, right *now* it was about one developer
to fill a vacancy in a larger developer/support group. Contract time is
2016-09-01 - 2020-12-31 and I guess there will be other places before
2020. Full time. "OpenVMS, Cobol, SQL, Oracle Rdb, C". It is one of
the major swedish banks and its about software products for "Foreign
Exchange och Money Market".

Due to the fact that many members in the dev.group are bad in English,
spoken and written Swedish seems to be a requirement...

Anyway, 4.5 year fulltime consulting assignment is not too bad.
In particular if your are 4.5 year from retirement yourself... :-)

And it didn't suit me, too much travel.

Yes, if I was job hunting the Swedish language requirement might be
a bit of a problem. :-)

Thanks for the feedback. It's nice to know there's still new VMS
development going on.
