Hello.

I am trying to figure out if my video card driver or hardware is failing 
due to rare and random hard lock ups/crashes (require me to hit reset 
button) when playing videos in my old Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine: 
online Flash videos, MPEG-2, and TS files. I don't want to reinstall OS 
from scratch/add another HDD to test this. I was wondering if there were 
any live discs/USB flash medias that come with the latest close source 
ATI/AMD video drivers for my old Radeon 4870 video card?

a lateral observation.

if the drivers are already compatible on windows, chances are that the 
problem is hardware.

And on an old machine chances are its getting too hot.

So open her up and blow compressed air around and vacuum up the dead 
skin, flies, rat turds  and fag ash that flies out.

if the problem persists, come back and report :-)

I very much doubt anything 'live' comes with a free flash media burned in.

its sometimes worth frigging with XPs hardware acceleration settings too.

It looked fine, but I had this problem last year too after cleaning the 
dust out, swapping hardwares, etc. :)

Yeah, it seems like video accleration is the cause of the random rare 
lock ups. You can see the details in my

am trying to rerpdouce this outisde of my old WIndows XP Pro. SP3 
installation.

If they are closed source proprietary drivers, who would be able
to distribute such discs or flash media devices without entering
into a licencing agreement with AMD(ATI), and probably paying them
large sums of money?

So are you prepared to pay for a commercial distribution of GNU/Linux
that comes with these proprietary drivers, if available?

It comes with ATI/AMD's closed video driver? I didn't know that. I will 
have to wait for it to be released to the public (still has v6.7.1 on 
its web site). :(

	Then try an older Knoppix.  I had really good
results with it(7) in Live Mode.  If you really have
an older card you might get better results with the
older versions.

And what makes you think that Knoppix includes proprietary drivers when
it specifically says for each version words similar to

OK, I hope it can play HD 1080i and 720p MPEG-2 and TS videos smoothly 
like in Windows. I forgot to mention that I have an four year old ATI 
Radeon 4870 PCIe (512 MB VRAM) video card. I hope that's old enough.

	Gee maybe it isn't old enough. My experience with Radeon is confined to 
a really old card on the Inspiron 4000 with 8 MiG of RAM. And no that is 
not what I am currently using.  As to the output side I
have no notion.  The Knoppix I used to use on that machine was
3.12.  The matters you belatedly raise were barely contemplated at the
time that machine was built.  I had to cut back the virtual desktops
to one to get the Mandriva installed on it (along with XP) to work.

If you find no satisfaction with a Live distro, I'm *pretty sure* you can
install your favourite distro to a flash drive plugged into your system,
then install the ATI blob on that. So long as your computer can boot the
USB interface.

Ah OK. I will have to find a small distro that will fit on a USB flash 
stick. I only have a 256 MB to 4 GB sizes.

Dig out a used hard drive, put a full Linux of suitable vintage on it, and 
boot with it.  You don't even have to physically mount the drive, just 
open the case to get access to connectors, and temporarily hangthe drive 
off the side.

That's probably the route I'd go too, if I didn't already have a flash
drive. Used hard drives of sufficient size (6G+) are soooo cheap, it's
more of a hassle acquiring them, than their cost usually justifies.
