#4169 — DNS question

SubjectDNS question
Message-ID<pj26q9$jkm$1@news.albasani.net>
Greetings!

How can I provide the IP addresses of servers inside a network?

I have several Win workstaions which must access linux servers using
their names rather
than IP addresses.
I do not want to edit windows hosts file.

A server acts as internet gateway/firewall.

Do I have to setup a liocal DNS (named)?
Any advise would be very much appreciated.

Why not?

Yes, if you do not want to use the hosts files.

Change the hosts files.

Maybe the easiest solution to this is dnsmasq, which serves
the names from an outside server and from the hosts file
of the computer it is running on. It is by far easier to
configure than other DNS servers.

In addition, dnsmasq can work as the BOOTP/DHCP server for
the local network.

I violently agree with this. Getting dnsmasq going is a breeze,
and it does its job very well.

Sometimes, Linux machines can broadcast their names using Samba. No, I
do not know how, only that I have seen it happen sometimes, and not others.

The easiest solution is a DNS server (yes, dnsmasq is very easy). Or
edit the hosts files on all affected machines...

WINS. Enable it in smbd.conf and the Linux box will act as a WINS server/

Bind is not that difficult for a simple LAN zone.

Ah.

But dnsmasq is even easier :-)

Just add entries to the standard hosts file.

It's not that easy either. dnsmasq is much easier for a "I don't need
much, just need this to work" kind of situation.
