#3672 — how to map devices to a "wlan" name

Subjecthow to map devices to a "wlan" name
Message-ID<nci371$nnr$1@dont-email.me>
Hi,

I want to use a raspberrrypi with two wifi devices (as a meshed-network
node). They show up a sdevice "wlan0" and "wlan1";

Question:
How is determined what device is given what name? Is there a fixed order
in this.

(the problem is I want to configure them in /etc/network/interfaces, but
as one device runs on the 2.4 Ghz band and the other on 5 Ghz band, they
have a different configuration).

I am looking for a setup which is as generic as possible. (e.d.
usb-deviceid based, device serial-number ?)

Any idea ???

Cheerio! Kr. Bonne.

UDEV normally makes sure they always get the same name

/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules the MAC address is used as the
unique identifier

The new procedure numbers them according to their address on the pci
bus. Thus you get wlp3s25, or wlp0s6 which are stable, and once you have
figured out the mapping from the random numbers to your particular
device it will stay that way (unless you put them into some other place
on the bus) This was precisely to "solve" the problem you are having. As
stated on the older distros, use the udev rules to assign the number to
a specific name.

Gerrit, William,

Thanks for your replies. it did give me some ideas.

In the end, I found two sollutions.

- patch the linux kernel-mmodule so it gives a different name.

I am patching the module-source anyway as I modifying wifi devices to
operate on ham-radio frequencies.

- do not use "/etc/network/interfaces" to actually configure the
devices; but just use them to start an external script and put the
intelligence in there: determine the type of wifi-device based on
"iwlist freq" and work from there on.

Thanks!

Cheerio! Kr. Bonne.
