I am planning to retrieve SMS/MMS messages from an Android phone. The phone will be connected via an USB cable to a windows xp pc. I am going write an Android program using socket, another on PC; I suppose these two components can communicate via sockets. But I do have a doubt. Normally sockets are done through network interface card. In the situation above, the phone and PC is connected via a USB cable. Would there be any problem ? Thanks.

Networks often use a NIC to build the connection out to "the network", but this isn't essential (think modems, serial connections, PPP, etc.). There are also Unix domain sockets, which are used for communication on a (typically Unix-like) local server. There are other socket types, too (IPX, X.25, Appletalk, etc). > In the situation above, the phone and PC is connected via a USB > cable. Would there be any problem ? There could be lots of problems. How are you going to get the PC and the Android to talk to each other over USB? Are you going to be permitted to have an application scrape SMS messages from the phone and present them out via some interface? Last time I tried, it seemed that plugging a USB cable into my Wildfire (Android-based device) caused it either to use the USB purely for charging, or to dismount the SD Card and present that to my PC as a USB disk drive. I don't recall a client/server option - but I could easily be wrong, as I wouldn't have been looking for such an option anyway. Personally, if I needed an SMS gateway/interface for a PC based application I'd either look at using a directly connected device, such as a 3G modem, or else something that worked with gnokii or one of its alternatives/successors. The latter option works well for me, here. Oh, by the way, I'm puzzled why you're asking in a Linux networking newsgroup about Android and Windows XP. I suspect you might be better off asking such questions in the MSDN forums over there --> Chris

Don't know about Android and XP, but with the Openmoko Freerunner
connected to a GNU/Linux PC, it was very straightforward to do that.

Maybe you can use usbnet module I once used it, on linux. It exists also on windows. You connect the cable and the os create a virtual interface on the pc (like a virtual ethernet card) and also another interface on the phone side. You assign an usable ip on the pc-side interface (obviously it has to be in the same net of the ip of the phone interface), then you can connect to the phone. Also, this is the way Rsync works on windows. :)
