As far as I can remember Thunderbird do not support auto compact, so the
deleted message is only marked for deletion until you either run the
compact on the mail directory or exit thunderbird.

You can for example connect with alpine and see the mail with a D
marking showing the mail is marked for deletion.

I've routinely had Thunderbird prompt if I want a folder to be compacted
because it will save enough space to be worth prompting / doing.

I believe that's dependent on the type of mailbox backing the IMAP
server or store that Thunderbird is using.

Not that sure about this, as I believe this is part of the IMAP standard
and it's the client which has to see to that the mail is deleted.

There was an auto-compact plugin for thunderbird, but not sure if it's
still supported.

Depending on the local cache type, Thunderbird marks messages as deleted
when it's deleting messages from the IMAP server. But it doesn't
actually delete them from the local cache to save space.

It will occasionally realize that there are enough messages marked for
deletion that it's worth compacting the file. When it does, it will
prompt and ask if you want it to do so or not.

Modern Thunderbird is overly aggressive at compaction,
and will pester the daylights out of you. Some much older
versions weren't nearly as bad for this behavior.

Under: edit -> Preferences -> Advanced
Change "Compact all folders when it will save over {nn} MB in total".
Or, uncheck that feature and rely on occasional manual compaction.

Hmm, I get an ask yes/no prompt on compaction and have not seen the
popup since.

But the OP wants local storage.

That's on local folders. On Imap folders it is up to the server.

Thunderbird will cache IMAP contents locally. That's independent of the
Local Folders account.

Yes. But again, what Aho said re deleting, compacting, and Alpine, does
not apply to the IMAP folders cached locally.

Wasn't talking about OP, but about IMAP.
