#3618 — WiFi setup - dual boot question

SubjectWiFi setup - dual boot question
Message-ID<4fOdnVzY5_YJJvXLnZ2dnUU7-UGdnZ2d@earthlink.com>
New to Linux, can't find an answer searching, looking for help.

I installed Debian 8 on an old laptop dual booting with Windows XP. The
Linux system said it needs a firmware update to the Broadcom 4306 wifi
adapter to use it. My question is, if I install this firmware, will it break
the adapter for use with XP? I tried the NDIS wrapper as a safe workaround,
but it failed to function.

Can you find documentation (from Broadcom) about that firmware update?
It should document what OSes it works with. If not, try googling on
the firmware update's name.

Disclaimer: I have no experience with wifi adapters myself.

Is it not the case that the firmware update would apply to Linux
alone?

At least some firmware is "temporary" in that it applies only as long as
power is applied to the card. Thus it is reloaded at each reboot.

Does it really need a "firmware update" or does it just need "firmware" ?
AFAIK the Broadcom 4306 is one of these chips which don't have non-volatile
memory to save firmware permanently. So the windows driver also loads
firmware onto the chip everytime it starts. But it hides that firmware
loading from the user.

Thank you, that answers the question. All wifi products I have used have
non-volatile memory that holds firmware updates. I assumed the same here.
