So it seems to be unrelated with the ethernet interface (unlike a PPPoE connection). Again, I cannot see a reason for the behaviour you observe. What happens if the gateway or another host on the ethernet network tries to communicate with the Debian system ? Is the communication on eth2 restored after the PPP connection is terminated ?
