I finally gave in and updated xubuntu-11.04 to 11.10 on my Acer
Aspire One netbook. Since upgrading, I have been unable to use the
wireless adapter to connect to a network. It worked fine with
11.04, and it still works fine in Windows XP so I know it isn't a
hardware issue. The kernel module "ath5k" loads, but the Network
Manager cannot find a network to connect with.

lshw sees the hardware:

  *-network
       description: Wireless interface
       product: AR242x / AR542x Wireless Network Adapter
(PCI-Express)
       vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0
       logical name: wlan0
       version: 01
       serial: 00:24:2c:1a:72:57
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix bus_master cap_list
ethernet physical wireless
       configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ath5k
driverversion=3.0.0-16-generic firmware=N/A ip=192.168.1.66
latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg
       resources: irq:18 memory:94100000-9410ffff

I can invoke ifconfig to wake up the interface and assign it an
address:

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:2c:1a:72:57
          inet addr:192.168.1.66 Bcast:192.168.1.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:58 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:157 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:6554 (6.5 KB) TX bytes:18836 (18.8 KB)

But I still am not connected to my wireless network.

iwconfig shows the interface:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20

          Encryption key:0652-9261-54
          Power Management:off

And iwlist finds the signal from my access point:

wlan0 Scan completed :
          Cell 01 - Address: 64:0F:29:0F:81:A1
                    Channel:2

                    IE: Unknown: 32043048606C

But rfkill shows a soft block I am unable to clear:

0: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

Is there a solution short of reverting to 11.04?
