For people with kits that won't run W11, there's a new kid in town:

I clicked on "find", and discovered several scattered around the SF Bay area.

It's too bad there isn't a group like "Geek Squad" that caters to Linux.  But,
these sites may help fill the gap...kudos to them!

I was surprised to find 2 relatively near me. One 50Km, the other 128, 
at Murcia and Alicante.

In France I wouldn't go in a repair café for that. A repair café is more
related to hardware. To software I would look for something else.

In France we have Framasoft which initiated a way to help people switch
from Windows to Linux a long time ago. Because it's cool to say that
proprietary software is shit, but once it's said, what can be done? So
they help people to find better ways: <https://framasoft.org/en/> Their
website is bad: it looks cool but it's very difficult to find
relevant information in it. I mean, you can follow it to discover
information, but when you know what you are looking for, it's very
difficult to know how/where you can find it.

Once they started to become bigger they saw things differently. They
didn't want to start being like google but better because they say so.
So they launched the chatons <https://www.chatons.org/en> or kittens in
English but the acronym is lost. The purpose is: if you know the guys
who handles your data because you can drink a beer with him, he would be
less interested to shit on you. So, the purpose is not to say some
chatons are better than others, but to say that it's better to find
someone close to you.

And if I want to know where something is happening about free software
near me and when, I have the « agenda du libre » or "agenda of the Free"
here: <https://www.agendadulibre.org/>

Don't you have anything similar in the US (or in Spain)? We really have
a lot of possibilities to find help to switch to Linux in France.

	Type in your region and the words "Linux Users Group" which is how I
  found my local San Francisco-Linux Users Group about 20 years ago to get
  help with getting my first x86, a 2.4 GHz Pentium, laptop, online.
	People are having fewer problems with the main GNU/Linux distributions
these days and are happy with the Android devices so the LUGs seem to be
going out of favor.

Linux users groups are not its primary concern.
If I went there I would be far more interested in its history than its 
Internet bandwidth. It has been around the block a few times...

Yes, there are a bunch in Europe, but one does not travel 1500 Km to get 
to one. It is a different language, but also we don't see distance the 
same way as Americans.

There are some in Madrid or Barcelona, which would be more practical 
(just a bit), if I needed one. Likely it would be the reverse, me 
helping others.

Also Spain it's mountainous as hell (2nd in Europe)
and even in the 90's you would spend several
hours (even under highways) to reach some further away places...

If I had to describe Spain, it's like a videogame map.
You have a little bit of everything cramped down. 
Nearly every climate (yes, snowy and icy winters too,
and not just in the Pyrenees) and terrain. 
And different cultures as well.
It's like a .7z compressed USA.

	Due to contacts with Norway and a few  contributors from former
UK and mainland Europe I have  some idea but did not know that Carlos
was living in a Tech desert.

	 I never got to Europe but spent time over 65 years ago on Taiwan
which has changed a lot and a few weeks in a Japanese port. waiting for
a ship to take me back to the USA.  Japan from everything I read has
changed a lot as well.  But my contacts are in France, the Netherlands
  and Germany as well as ciied abover.
	I don't know much about the states East of Nevada and was in
NYC only twice I think spending most of my time learning a trade I
could not practice as a civilian in New London, Connecticut.  I have
driven the long road between there and California once and took
a bus to the East Coast.>

That could be turned around. I don't think most of the world, including 
much of the U.S., realizes just how different New York State is beyond 
New York City...

I am a proud native New Yorker, but I have spent less than a week of my 
76 years in New York City. BTW, there is one of these Repair Cafes 
within 25km of my house, but I don't remember ever hearing of it before.

I grew up outside of Troy and it certainly wasn't NYC. I was long gone but 
it pissed me off how Gillebrand said the right things to get elected 
upstate but then stepped into Clinton's shoes and became Hillary Jr.

A soon as I landed in New York I hated it.
I wasnt that much enamored of Boston and Philly, but I had an unlimited 
bus pass, and took a bus (mistakenly - meant to go to San Francisco) to 
LA and hung out there. Loved the empty bits in between - especially the 
deserts, high plains and mountains.

LA felt  a bit like home. but I ran out of money and ended up in SF. 
Weird place.

The whole experience convinced me that by and large Americans simply 
have no idea about anything, let alone the world outside the USA. They 
just live in a country so stuffed full of real genuine wealth - 
farmland, minerals, forests - that getting to be rich is something that 
is hard to avoid.

Nevertheless they managed to.

I've been around  around 12 European countries, most of the Northern 
USA, Canada, Mexico, South Africa...

NYC is an acquired taste. It was only 150 miles from where I lived so I 
did day trips. A couple of times when I had work there I'd stay a few 
days.

I worked in Boston quite a bit and would rent a room for the duration. I 
enjoyed walking around the different areas but unless there was some event 
I was headed back to New Hampshire Friday afternoon. 

My mental health requires mountains. I took what was supposed to be a 3 
month gig in Indiana that lasted for a year and a half. Except for the 
southern part of the state it's flatter than hell. I'd ride my bicycle for 
miles looking at soybeans, turn around, and look at more soybeans. It's 
rather hard to take a leak when all there is are knee high soybeans. At 
least with corn you can disappear.

My mental health requires absence of chittering humanity. I am happy in 
mountains as well as deserts and rocks.

I too would get a bit bored in the middle of the thousand mile flat 
cornfields of the mid west. Nice people tho.
