I was brought up to believe that you should never give offence if you
can avoid it; the new culture tells us you should always take offence if
you can. There are now experts in the art of taking offence, indeed
whole academic subjects, such as 'gender studies', devoted to it.

Then why have I put MX on nine units ??? :-)

It's THE best ... and spent almost forever on top
   of the DistroWatch list.

"Middle-weight" distro, you can make it more, or less,
as required. Some great included utilities you don't
   normally see elsewhere too.

Sorry laddie ... but I'm gonna have to say MX is
   "the best".

USED to be an Ubuntu guy - until it went all weird
and proprietary. Then Deb ... until IT apparently
hired some Canonical rejects. Tried various others
   but was NOT happy.

DO have one Manjaro box ... it's "ok" ... but in time
I'll move the vital stuff to an MX install.

Now, for the record, I don't HATE Mint. It does serve
many purposes/interests/environs and I used to use it
on many boxes. However MX strikes me as overall "better".

As I am an openSUSE user, I don't understand the idea of having
different "distributions" with just a different desktop. openSUSE has a
bunch of them, and you can install any or all of them. Each user of the
machine can use a different one.

Ok, the install DVD usually comes with KDE and Gnome, while XFCE has to
be downloaded. We had a brawl years ago so that the installer would not
mark any desktop by default, the user had always to choose. That kept
both the KDE and Gnome crowds happy.

The commercial version, though, I think comes with only Gnome. KDE comes
from the community.

Basically it deskills the setup process.

E.g. installing Linux Mint Cinnamon edition sets up a default user
environment that is satisfactory, familiar to a windows user. and works
without further configuration.

It's target 'market' is people who just want an OS that isn't Windows
that SimplyWorks™

You may prefer some other philosophy, but that's why there are different
distros

I think raw gnome is a bit shit personally.

I run with MATE, which is 'traditional gnome' not the new fangled crap

I was a gnome user for a long time, till that crap you say came. I
switched to XFCE and I am still there.

Oh, absolutely! Use whatever you are used to and like.

Some people asked me to try Plasma. It is wonderful, they said. Ok, I
tried. Ok, nice features. But I could not work around some quirks. Back
to XFCE.

I spent quite a while, 2-3 months IIRC, trying to adapt to Gnome 3 (and
to adapt it to me). I am quite adaptable, using all of Windows, macOS,
Android and desktop Linux regularly, but still didn’t manage to get used
to Gnome 3. So MATE it is.

My only contact with Gnome 3 is the API. I don't do much graphics
programming, and I work in straight C, not C++. Gnome was the only
graphics toolkit I could find with C linkages, so it was Hobson's Choice.

I did use Centos for a little while - the G3 interface
was just TERRIBLE. Did manage to get something else
running on it. They didn't really WANT you to use
anything but G3 on it though ....

Best compromise bet these days is XFCE. Very usable.

MATE is 'sort of usable' ... I don't HATE it, but
   don't like it either.

I can never rember which is which. Can you explain in a few words the
difference betwen LXDE and XFCE?

Last I recall, LXDE is one of those lightweight GUIs, XFCE is not.

XFCE is still pretty "light". It is a little more
'integrated', with a little more 'eye candy', than
LXDE however. If you can't find an LXDE install for
yer distro then use XFCE as the next-best.

Now if you're using something like a PI then
LXDE or a close mutation IS what you want just
   to save memory/CPU/GPU.

This may be subjective and also adversely affected by memory but I think
I recall a point nearly two decades ago where XFCE was "light" and
changed (was it around the time of GTK+2?) in a way that made it more
"bloated" than it was before.

These days, all I need is a window manager, so it's perhaps easier to
get something "lighter".

   Well, there's "ICEwm" ........

XFCE is still "light" compared with most others,
