Question CentOS 7.1 VPS won't respond
Hello,

After a successfull setup of CentOS 7 and upload of websites and configuration and upgrade to CentOS 7.1 my VPS when i hit restart wont respond to ssh conenct neither it laods any webistes.

I just conencted to it via serial console but i dont know how to troubleshoot to identify whats wrong.

Help me if you please on what should i check.

Does your virtual hosting let you get at a virtual console?
(Serial is OK if you have tested it, got used to it etc - coming in cold 
with nothing more than a serial console can be a tad fickle)

I wish i could tell you more but i dont know what it broke everything was working okey after the setup of virtualmin and the configurations, all websites ere loading okey, but after the reboot nothing seems to respond.

That is all i know and i can tell.

Well, you are just going to have to get in there I'm afraid, no one is 
going to be able to help you without any information.

So to repeat the question, do you have a text console available on your 
hosting provider? Hint - VMWare = yes, Xen=no (unless that's changed).

I only have one thing called emergency console, nothing else.
From there i can view whatever logs you ask me to view.

Remember VPS runs CentOS 7.1 x64.

I know nothing of the particulars of VPS.

But is this "emergency console" a regular terminal console - ie can you 
type commands and/or log in as root?

If so, the first thing is:

Check to see if it is prompting you to intervene as a fsck failed on 
startup.

second, if you can type commands or log in as root, give us the output of:

ifconfig -a

Try:

df

or

/bin/df

if the first does not work.

and can you try:

/sbin/ifconfig



if nothing works, try:

ls /
ls /sbin
ls /bin
ls /usr/bin
ls /usr/sbin


I am wondering if the system has failed to start userland properly and 
you are in the mini environment that's comes in initrd ??


I am not a centos user BTW - I am make suggestions from general principles.

Have you also tried rebooting it again?

Damn! 

Stuff form my hosting company fixed the issue, but dont know how they managed it....

Good that everything works but damn i didnt had the chance to try what you have requested me to try out :(

Now i have normall ssh access. do you want me to try somehting via normal ssd?

perhaps we can still find out what they have issued to fix this....

You could look in /var/log/syslog* or /var/log/messages*

and see what happened around the time of the reboot that failed.

/var/log/messages do exist and its a huge file filles with timestamps acts.

Do i have to look something in particular in there?

Yes - everything around the time of the update - before and after.

You are looking for perhaps an error that relates to networking (eth0 
maybe) or something about filesystems?
I'm afraid you'll just have to flick through it - it's what the rest of 
us sysadmins have to do when stuff breaks ;-)

There's no magic guidance - maybe you will see something maybe you won't...

Well, just start looking then - it's what the rest of us had to do. No 
point in sitting here putting it off.

People are happy to help, but you have to get in there and look at 
stuff. And really look. I've told you all I can - now prepare for the 
boredom of scanning through pages of log files wondering if anything 
might be relevant.


Or you could just ignore it and hope it does not happen again - a valid 
strategy for one offs - I do it occasionally where a non critical system 
has had no previous history of problems and it does not seem to be a 
repeating event.

Damn!

Stuff have fixed the server, its good that evrrything is functional again but bad because i didnt had the chnage to try what you suggested.

I'm in normal ssh currently do you want me to show you some of the logs there to - perhaps we can find out what they have done somehow....?!
