That’s a matter of how you configure your system. Personally I don’t
usually have any variant of vi installed at all and have used Emacs in
single-user mode many times.

Not really....

No, joe is available in that mode on openSUSE, and possibly SUSE too.

> - very fast and light (even through remote connections)

joe is possibly faster. And you can use it in emacs or pico emulation
modes, thus can be familiar to more people. I haven't verified that vi
is available in that mode recently.

Available, perhaps, in the sense of you could get it and compile it.

But not likely to already be there.

Also, who in the heck wants to use Windows Notepad (aka, nano) ?

I was wondering that also. No more replies. That seems to have thrown a wrench in their rebuttals.

Well, i was talking about unix but not linux only. At least on the unix
systems i administrated - solaris, aix, hp-ux, ibm uss - there was no nano
installed.
On the other hand I found on every system i had my hands on the
vi editor.
But what do I know..

Exactly. Some of us were not permies sitting at a desk able to install
whatever we wanted and play with it, we were on short term contracts or
on site visits setting up systems and the only thing you could guarantee
access to was vi or its even more primitive forbear, ed.

until openssh started printing instructions on how to purge bad
records from known_hosts ed was my go-to solution

ed ~/.ssh/known_hosts

314 here is line number of the bad record taken from the error message.

Or sed. Note: I don't often recommend sed - for reasons well explained by
a certain poster in comp.lang.awk, but this is one simple case where using
sed makes sense.

    sed -i.old 314d ~/.ssh/known_hosts

Note that this problem gets more tricky if you want to support deleting
more than one line in a single invocation. I actually figured out a way to
do this with sed - by invoking sed twice - but I think if I had to do it
over again, I'd do it in gawk instead.

    # Untested, but looks right to me...
gawk -i inplace 'BEGIN { for (i in ARGV) ToDelete[ARGV[i]] } !(NR in ToDelete)' \
	~/.ssh/known_hosts 314 319 762

sed -i -e 314d -e 315d ~/.ssh/known_hosts

or

sed -i '314,315d' ~/.ssh/known_hosts

No need to invoke sed twice.

You can do it with a single invocation of sed:

    sed -i.old '418d;327d;125d' ~/.ssh/known_hosts

You don't /have/ to do the lower lines first. But you do need to adjust
the line numbers of lower lines if you delete earlier lines first.

What I hate about it is when I accidentally start it. I then
usually have to go and dig around the web to find out how to close
it.

Nah, not really since ^X (it seems) provides the exit strategy. I still
purge it from my systems because when I have vim installed, there really
is no need for any other editor.
