...how little fuss was made about our JOINING the EU - merely a little
trade treaty, we were told. The Common Market.

None of the stuff that has emerged since or is a political hot potato
now was ever debated.

Were they unaware? Or did they lie to us?

Governments lie. Aside from killing and stealing, it is what they do best.

You clearly were not around when the joining happened. It was hardly
"how little fuss". There was a huge fuss. I think you have an axe to
grind which makes you either completely misremember history, or
purposely distort history.

Where in your long life did you ever get the impression that trade
treaties were not political? Or that "new" things did not crop up in
any treaty.

I was.

Not really, only by a minorirty on both sides.

I beg your pardon, what has that got to do with anything?
WE didn't debate them then or later.

Because our permission to enforce them was not needed..

I think you already proved the exact reverse.

How does that relate to Linux?

Otherwise, this is off topic. Please post that to a more appropriate group.

What part of "OT:" don't you get?

Or, to put it another way, if he had decided to post to a politics group,
it would have been inappropriate to post it as "OT:".

I think he was pointing out that just because you label something OT
does not mean that you should regard yourself as free to post whereever
you want. OT should mean "Off Topic" not "Inappropriate for this
newsgroup". Ie, what part of separate newsgroups do you not get?

Actually, I think I posted it to entirely the wrong newsgroup anyway.

So why not all let's simply ignore it and let it die?

Hitler was right. People don't think ahead. They do a knee-jerk
 reaction
when everything is decided and put into practice, and they feel
 the effects.
