And, to have used glass thermometers with mercury in it. When broken, and the little blob of mercury fell out, to have squished the blob into many smaller blobs and been delighted to have seen them all reunite into one blob. That was done by a forefinger before we knew that the mercury was harmful. Some clock pendulums contained a small compartment where the mercury would slide from one side to the other as the pendulum swung like a pendulum do. Damn...now I've got "England Swings" by Petula Clark as an earworm.

One day we tried making a barometer; we sealed the end of a long glass tube, filled it with the mercury, then tried to stand it up. Unfortunately we weren't careful enough supporting the tube along its entire length, and it broke under the weight of the mercury. Then there wasn't just one little blob of mercury on the floor, but a whole bunch of medium- to large-size blobs. We managed to get most of it picked up by doing things like sliding a paper towel under each blob. Needless to say, a lot of various floor sweepings came with it; I spent some time pouring the mercury back and forth between two containers and picking out the contaminants (all of which floated, of course). Mercury flowing down a funnel looks amazing. In grade school the desks were old enough to have both a cutout for an inkwell and a groove, presumably to hold a pen or pencil. The groove was just right to shuttle a blob of mercury back and forth. Eventually they were replaced with the chairs with the integral writing surface. Those suck if you're left handed.
