#24576 — Interesting error

SubjectInteresting error
Message-ID<pogg9g$hm0$1@news.albasani.net>
I notice the following error diagnostic in my X log today:

[27504:27504:0926/110651.589645:ERROR:browser_dm_token_storage_linux.cc
(93)] Error: /etc/machine-id contains 32 characters (32 were expected).

If I understand it correctly, the complain is that 32 characters
have been read out of a total of 32, when only 32 characters were
expected. I guess there is a difference between 32 and 32.

Did you actually check if /etc/machine-id has 32 characters?

Here:

https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=5903622

People were reporting that error when /etc/machine-id doesn't exist.
It's not clear that Chrome really needs it, but the error was silenced
(there) by makint /etc/machine-id a synlink to the new machine-id file
location (/var/lib/dbus/machine-id).

Probably any appropriate looking content would be fine.

On my machine, there is no such file. The only one at all like it is
/var/lib/dbus/machine-id
and it is 32 digits followed by a newline, for a total of 33.

$ cat /var/lib/dbus/machine-id | wc
      1 1 33

I have no /etc/machine-id file. My /var/lib/dbus/machine-id file
contains 33 characters, including a closing carriage return character.
Quite frankly, this inspires very little confidence in whomever is
responsible for this sloppiness.

It's used to try to uniquely id a machine, which makes it ideal for
tracking by websites.

See http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man5/machine-id.5.html

From "man machine-id" regarding /etc/machine-id, "This machine ID adheres
to the same format and logic as the D-Bus machine ID."

Your choices are to ignore the error message, give in to web site tracking
and create the /etc/machine-id file with the proper format, which can
be done with systemd-machine-id-setup on systemd based installations,
or by moving /var/lib/dbus/machine-id to /etc and then creating a symlink
with ln -s /etc/machine-id /var/lib/dbus/, or get rid of the error, but
defeat the tracking by setting up the system so that a new value is
generated every boot.

Regards, Dave Hodgins

It’s just a mistake in the diagnostic.
