Not that it made any difference to the deafness of "portable" TVs and TV sticks; I had those in analogue days too, and they still needed an outside aerial in most cases. >> >> At the cottage, and without any fancy antenna system, we could >> just barely get enough analog signal on one TV channel, to get audio. >> The picture was pure white snow, nothing to sync to, but >> you could still get audio, which was good enough for >> the nightly news. >> > Well woohoo > > Digital preserved picture quality well down into the noise. The concept of > "graceful degradation" seems to have gone out of style. > It doesn't go from (0,0) to (X,Y) like a scan line thing. If we could afford to do it that way, the degradation characteristic would be different. Maybe it couldn't be squeezes into a 6MHz channel width if you did that. It's a computer format, suited to being written right to disk. It's even possible the video SIP on your video card, could decode the format as if it was a movie. The signal from a digital TV tuner card is suitable for directly being written to disk. Or, it can be decoded immediately. If you are recording from a digital tuner and not looking immediately at the picture, that activity is relatively low-powered. If you are previewing the image at the same time, you would "pay for one decode" of the stream. When you play the stream later, you would pay for one decode of the encoded info. We can use the format immediately (as in a TV set) or delay consumption by using a video recorder (disk). The format could be re-encoded (with the objective being, to reduce the size on disk a bit more), but if so, maybe the licensing fee would be larger or different. You could squeeze 50% more out of the format (and it might just feel like it had been squeezed if you did that). Television stations, used to run a "live encoder", a thing working in real time. Since a video card can process raw frames at 11x the TV transmission rate, it isn't particularly onerous to do that. But very occasionally, the encoder at the station is overwhelmed when there is too much action in a movie (encoding method failure). A movie explosion for example, you can start to see macroblocks from the source end (a defect before transmission), whereas failures on reception cause more of the visual defects we see (when signal is weak and forward error correction cannot handle it). When the video and sound packets are too screwed up to decode, that's when it goes over the cliff. Depending on how slimy the design is, it could replay a decoded frame for an additional frame time, to replace a suitably-defective frame. The receivers are not designed to do that forever, as a strategy. The black screen is considered more indicative. If the nightly news announcer froze on the set, you'd be banging the side of the set with your hand. The black screen as a status, you're less likely to have a freak out, as you have heard about "the cliff". Banging the set with your hand, we were doing that decades ago, as a fun source of entertainment. There can be two indicator bars, one for signal strength, the other indicator could be a quality indication but I don't know what their metric is for that one. You can have a full height signal indicated, and yet the quality can be scraping the bottom. That might happen if there was multipath or something. Don't know the details. Paul

What really gets me is how remarkably opposite the VHF vs. UHF situation is, with digital. The few stations that had 7-13 VHF under analog wanted to keep that signal with digital, because it's so much lower cost to broadcast than UHF, but reception is poorer than UHF, whereas under analog TV it was the reverse, with UHF sometimes being very unstable. -- Joel W. Crump

There USED to be a TV Channel-1 ... then that was grabbed. I think some short-range drones and model aircraft use that freq now. Lower-speed data and voice channels ... the freqs used by VHF TV were cheap and perfect - so they GRABBED them. IS there a remaining UHF TV band now ? Many channels were 'reserved'. Same kind of greedy issues. Grease yer pols, get results. Nothing new.

I was looking stuff up and channel number in (at least UK) UHF is multiply number by 8, and add 306MHz So 8Mhz wide channels. UK uses channels 21 to 68 Each transmitter is expected to to carry about 6-8 channels (Muxes) and these have been carefully selected to allow a single (band) tuned antenna to receive them all adequately and be far away from nearby transmitters as well, to reduce interference Group A: Channels 21–34 (Lower range) Group B: Channels 39–53 (Middle range) Group C/D: Channels 48–68 (Upper range) My transmitter is AB (Used to be C.D) ranging from channel 29 to 47 -- Climate Change: Socialism wearing a lab coat.

IS there a remaining UHF TV band now ? Yes - in Europe, I think originally something like 440-870; in UK at least, they kept selling off chunks of the top, so it now stops something like 690 (someone said earlier in this thread). >>>> Many channels were 'reserved'. Same kind of greedy >>>> issues. Grease yer pols, get results. Nothing new. In UK, channel 36 was reserved for something like airport radar. Which is why any home kit with a modulator (lots of home computers, most VCRs) output on that channel, as no TV would be tuned to it; some had slight adjustment available. Much as I understand that such modulators in US were on channel 3 or 4 (though I think that's VHF), though I don't know if for a similar reason. >>> >>> All digital terrestrial TV in the world is in the UHF band. I was looking stuff up and channel number in (at least UK) UHF is > multiply number by 8, and add 306MHz for the UHF channels. When we still used VHF for TV, the 405-line system (system A) used narrower channels; they were in Band I (sometimes called VHF low in other countries), which is about 50-70, and Band III, of which I think one of the edges was 174. The BBC used Band I, ITV band III. (Band II - 89.5-108 - was and is still used for FM sound radio. which I think uses lower frequencies [as well?] in parts of the world.) > > So 8Mhz wide channels. The rest of Europe used much the same on the VHF bands (I think they were actually 7 MHz - that's what the difference was between PAL B and PAL G - but I don't think the receivers had different circuitry, they were all sound 5.5 MHz above vision carrier. [Britain used PAL I - wider video bandwidth and 6 MHz sound - but still the same channel numbers on UHF, 21-68.]) > > UK uses channels 21 to 68 > Each transmitter is expected to to carry about 6-8 channels (Muxes) and And miscellaneous radio and data channels. > these have been carefully selected to allow a single (band) tuned > antenna to receive them all adequately and be far away from nearby > transmitters as well, to reduce interference The transmitters are co-sited too, so you only need one aerial pointed at the local group. The channels for a given area used to be at least (I think) about 3 channels apart, so the tuners in TV sets could be suitably grotty; since the switch to digital, to get (in most areas) 6 multiplexes where there were previously 4 analogue channels, adjacent channels are now frequently used - I think my local ones are something like 40, 41, 43, 44, and maybe 47 for the "HD" one (see next paragraph). "Channel 5" was a maverick. With amazing forward planning, when the UHF channel plan for the country was established - 1950s I think - they only anticipated there being three channels (two BBC and one ITV), but they actually planned the system for four channels in each area. When Channel 5 came along, you often needed an extra aerial - it tended to use channel 36 (which was being released from airport radar or whatever it was, about that time), and it wasn't necessarily co-sited, either. One multiplex is T2. The industry (in UK) refers to T1 as SD and T2 as HD, to the confusion of the public; sure, all the channels on the T1 multiplexes are indeed SD and all the HD channels are on the T2 multiplex, but the T2 multiplex carries at least one SD channel as well as the HD ones, for which you need a T2 decoder (that channel is shown in the listings magazines as "HD only", even though it's not actually in HD). [Originally, only SD was used, and sets only had a T1 decoder.] > > Group A: Channels 21–34 (Lower range) > Group B: Channels 39–53 (Middle range) > Group C/D: Channels 48–68 (Upper range) > > > My transmitter is AB (Used to be C.D) ranging from channel 29 to 47 > As I said earlier, the top has been sold off, so the top few channels are not in use - I thin they stop around 48 now.> > > -- Climate Change: Socialism wearing a lab coat. > (You need the "-- " to be on a line by itself.) Originally UHF channels 14-83 were in the 470-890 band. Then the band got cut off at 806 MHz (and given to cell phones and such), and TV tuners only went up to channel 69. More cuts came later. By then many people were on cable, and a lot of bandwidth was re-assigned; the signals weren't going out over the air, so the cable companies had free rein. Our cable provider moved FM stations down to the lower half of the 88-108 MHz band, and eventually did away with FM coverage completly. Currently it is named "Spotmusic". Different technology. The old one transmitted 6 channels on the same copper pair used for the phone, at a higher frequency. Somewhat similar to ADSL. -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

uk.tech.broadcast added, as it seemed appropriate! I'll maybe remove the Windows and Linux ones next time. Somewhat similar to ADSL. >> I asked GoogleAI: Yes, Rediffusion originally started in the UK by relaying radio broadcasts directly to subscribers' homes over wired networks. How the Radio Relay Worked • Wired Distribution: Founded as Broadcast Relay Service Limited (later named Rediffusion) in 1928, the company used physical cables to pipe radio programs straight into houses. • No Radio Set Needed: Subscribers did not need an expensive or complicated wireless radio receiver; they only needed a simple loudspeaker and a selector switch wired to the Rediffusion network. • Clear Reception: The wired "pipe radio" system eliminated static, fading, and interference common with early aerial radio transmissions. • BBC and Local Feeds: The service provided crisp audio relays of BBC radio programmes and other stations from the early 1930s onwards, long before the company expanded into television rental and commercial broadcasting. The standard Rediffusion selector box was a purely mechanical, multi-position rotary switch that didn't require any mains electricity or batteries to function. ⚙️ How the Box Operated • Central Distribution: Rediffusion set up central amplification stations in towns. These stations received radio (and later, TV) signals over the air via high-quality aerials. • Multi-Core Cables: The amplified signals were sent out down the street using overhead cables that contained multiple separate wires (cores). Each core carried a different station or channel. • The Rotary Switch: The selector box in your living room was connected to this incoming multi-core cable. When you turned the dial, it physically moved a brass contact inside the box to connect your speaker to a specific pair of wires inside the cable. • Volume Control: The box also housed a simple variable resistor (potentiometer). Turning the volume knob restricted or allowed more electrical current to flow to the speaker, making the audio quieter or louder.Because the central station did all the heavy lifting of capturing and amplifying the signal, the box in the home was effectively just a remote switch and volume knob for a giant, town-wide audio system.>> So there you have it! It was as I thought - just audio distribution; not even carrier.> > > > and it seems like only 60 years ago that we had "Dial a Disc" ... I'm pretty surer that continued until at least the 1970s ... -- J. P. Gilliver.
