Endeavour has info but no ed although 'man ed' works, Fedora and Raspberry Pi OS have ed and no info. If they live through ed they can move on to sed and awk (mawk).

Wrote my own 'edlin' replacement, full-screen editor, way way back when DOS first came out. All ASM. Not gonna put up with that shit. Actually RENAME the fuckin' line editors that still come with Linux so they won't automatically evoke. Nano is the minimum ... and I do use it a lot.

However for most day-2-day stuff ... even writing short Python scripts ... I mostly just use 'nano'. Put nano in one terminal, a second for execution, back and forth, it goes quite fast. Over maybe 100 lines then you really do want a better editor. Note that 'MC' has one built in, sometimes use that. Alas when DOS first appeared, everything was centered on using 'edlin'. Just HORRIBLE ! Knew modern PCs could easily do a lot better, so I did it. I'm sure many others did as well. There's just no point/reason for line editors past 1984 folks !

In the case of DOS, it was much more likely just the result of MicroSoft's normal "half-ass it" attempts at everything they have done. It was easier to write an "ed" than a full screen editor, an "ed" meant DOS looked more CP/M like than without, so they "half-assed it" as usual and delivered just "ed" as part of DOS.

So works over ssh, works over telnet (if anyone is still telnetting), works inside a screen session, works inside a splittv pane, works in an xterm, etc. But, no 'menus', so one does have to have the keybinding keystrokes memorized. There is a WordStar inspired pop-up 'help pane' that shows the key bindings for those just starting down the memorize the keys path.
