My favourite utility: wily; blasts me in the face with a bright white
screen; so that I can't see the black keybrd, without artificial light.

If it showed a black background, with white text [like mc can be set to
do], it would be OK.

It's got facilities to select the font, at launch time, and toggle
between 2 fonts, after launching.

It would be nice if we had video-reversing, like we have Ctrl/Alt/+
size-cycling. This is X of course.

Please advise.

I would think that the light from the screen would allow you to see the
keyboard better. After all, nothing is quite so hard to see as a black
object in the dark.

I have no idea what wily is but most programs and terminals have an
ability to configure the screen and to replace black on white with white
on black (I like the former much better since the letters tend to be
sharper and not smear together-- possibly a function of my eyesight. My
wife like white on black)

It would be a program thing, not all of X.
You would not want all your blues to become magenta, etc.

You might tell him which manual to read, and where in the FM to read.
There are only about a GB worth of manuals out there, which would take a
long long time to read all of them.

The OP is a known troll, so the longer it takes him to find and read the
FM the better.

From xrandr(1):

     --brightness brightness
Multiply the gamma values on the crtc currently attached to
the output to specified floating value. Useful for overly
bright or overly dim outputs. However, this is a software
only modification, if your hardware has support to actually
change the brightness, you will probably prefer to use
	   xbacklight.

> If it showed a black background, with white text [like mc can be set to

Some programs support changing X library defaults on a per-session basis.
If the "utility: wily" is the acme editor clone, then you are in luck.
It's a straightforward Xt widget based program and you can put in your
~/.Xdefaults file lines like:

	wily*Background: black
	wily*Foreground: lightgray

And presto, you've reset the colors for that program. Those are my
defaults for xterms, and changing "Xterm" to "wily" worked for me.
Setting it per session (instead of from .Xdefaults) and working out
the color names is left as an exercise for the reader.

You don't seem to read well. The xrandr method works without hardware
support, while xbacklight requires hardware support. I suggested xrandr
because it's software only.

> => This is just a documentary file: explaing part of the X-bloat!

The big issue with X is that is it object oriented code written in
C before C++ came along. It's also absurdly flexible compared to it's
contemporaries. The whole separation of windowing system from windowing
manager thing is proof of that. Most of the bloat I find in X is stuff
that isn't using the basic libraries, but is using umpteen
Linux-specific libraries. You can tell the difference when you try to
compile them on an older system.

You want Windows, you know where to find it.

I've run MGR, too.

Plan 9 suffered, I think, because it didn't get released until many
variants of Unix were commercially available and people were already
playing with Linux for personal use.

I don't run Android anything because I really don't want to deal with
the Google connection there.
