#13680 — redirecting printer output to file PDF

Subjectredirecting printer output to file PDF
Message-ID<00d52381-a090-4def-b6c6-f1cdd2f02be5@googlegroups.com>
I filled out an online PDF form with text in the fields as it allowed this.
Before hitting the :send" button I tried to save a copy only to get the message that it was not allowed.

The form *did*, however, allow me to print it before leaving if I wished.

Is there a way I could have invoked the program from the command line so as to redirect the printer output to a file?

I have seen stderr redirection examples (stdin, stdout, stderr), but if there is no standard printer file such as stdprn I guess I might be out
 of luck.

Any ideas?

Among the printing options is usually an option to print to file.

You could go back to the page that had a link to the form, and choose
"save link as", but that probably wouldn't save your entries.

There's a printer driver for cups called pdfprint that creates a
virtual printer that writes a pdf file of the printed page(s).

It's quite nice for saving copies of web pages since it creates a
single file unlike 'save page in html'.

There is a cups-pdf package which allows you to print anything to

mgogala@medo ~]$ rpm -qa|grep -i cups-pdf
cups-pdf-2.6.1-7.fc20.x86_64

Similar packages also exist for other distributions, too. I use the same
trick on Ubuntu. When the package is installed, you get a corresponding
printer:

[mgogala@medo ~]$ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: Canon-PIXMA-MG3100
device for Canon-PIXMA-MG3100: lpd://lpt/0D88A3000000
device for Cups-PDF: cups-pdf:/
Canon-PIXMA-MG3100 accepting requests since Fri 13 Feb 2015 07:53:57 PM
EST
Cups-PDF accepting requests since Fri 20 Jun 2014 07:21:42 PM EDT
printer Canon-PIXMA-MG3100 is idle. enabled since Fri 13 Feb 2015
07:53:57 PM EST
	Data file sent successfully.
printer Cups-PDF is idle. enabled since Fri 20 Jun 2014 07:21:42 PM EDT

The printer is called Cups-PDF on my computer. You can then print to it:

[mgogala@medo ~]$ lp -d Cups-PDF ~/.bashrc
request id is Cups-PDF-127 (1 file(s))

Where will the printer put the output file, depends on your
configuration. In my case, the PDF version of my ~/.bashrc ended up on my
desktop. For the details, I recommend you doing what very few people do
these days: read the documentation. It's available here:

http://www.cups-pdf.de/documentation.shtml

On Fedora, cups-pdf.conf is located here:

[mgogala@medo ~]$ locate cups-pdf.conf
/etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf

Hi Mladen and Pureheart,

CUPS-pdf is what I use as well. I especially like it when
using rdesktop to RDP into a Windows computer and the Windows
computer won't allow printing (doPDF, etc.) while in an RDP
session.

On computes that do not have a printer, I install CUPS-PDF to
appease those programs that really want to see a printer.

CUPS-PDF writes your PDF to your (local) desktop.

If you want to edit these fill in forms, take a look at
PDF Studio from Qoppa (I love it)

Oh, this is great info. Since I'm about '2' on a scale of 1 to 10 of competence I hope it will install with a simple apt-get.

I don't get any choices 'cept my HP deskjet when I choose print to sort of replay to another post.

Thanks again for this information.

Most Desktop Environments have a 'Save as PDF' option when you try to print.

Generally. the default printer is shown with either a drop-down menu, or
else a 'Change' button so that you can select another printer. 'Save as
PDF' is generally one of those other 'printers' shown.

Success!
I went to install the package and was informed that it was already installed.

Was able to go over to the printer section, add new printer, there it was, installed and works as advertised.

comp.os.linux to the rescue. Thanks, guys, I really appreciate it.

It's frustating...odds are that the tools you're looking for exist...it's just knowing about 'em or their name that is needed. Glad you guys are here.

Cups-PDF internally uses Ghostscript, so don't be surprised if some jobs
take a bit longer to "print".

I am fairly sure ALL CUPS uses ghostcript, it seeming to be the case
that it turns everything into postscript first, then renders that using
ghostscript for the particular printer if that doesn't have postcript
support.

http://www.openprinting.org/download/kpfeifle/LinuxKongress2002/Tutorial/III.PostScript-and-PPDs/III.PostScript-and-PPDs.html

In fact that seems to suggests that actually cups-pdf is the one printer
that may NOT use ghostcript, along with other 'postcript capable'
printers....
