Dictionary server for gnome-dictionary is down for the last few days. [root@medo mgogala]# nslookup dict.org Server: 192.168.1.1 Address: 192.168.1.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: dict.org Address: 216.18.20.172 [root@medo mgogala]# telnet 216.18.20.172 2628 Trying 216.18.20.172... ^C The only available server I was able to locate was in Germany: dict.uni-leipzig.de and it gives me all kinds of translations except English-to-English, which is what I want. Does anybody know of a publicly available dictionary server in the US? I don't want to run one myself. -- Mladen Gogala The Oracle Whisperer http://mgogala.byethost5.com

I have observed the same thing. But from command line 'dict' client on
NetBSD.

I've been running a local one at $WORK on Ubuntu. It was a very simple
apt-get install, uses a modest amount of disk space by modern
standards[*], and does not use any appreciable amount of other
resources.
It's not like the dictionaries get updates often. There's no
administrative burden after install. You (and many more people) should
run local servers.
[*] $ du -sh /usr/share/dictd
45M /usr/share/dictd
I did not install any of the intra-language translation dictionaries.
Elijah
------
the dict server runs on port 2628, so root not needed

I was able to find another server at dict.tu-chemnitz.de so, dictd is not needed for now. -- Mladen Gogala The Oracle Whisperer http://mgogala.byethost5.com
