That's the one, thanks. According to Wiki it was cheap enough that it was
often bundled. I remember poking at it a couple of times but it wasn't
anything I would buy.

The only 'word processor' I've used for much was Wordstar. It came bundled
on the Osborne 1 and was a passable programming editor in text mode.
Supercalc was also bundled but I never figured out what to do with it or
the later iterations of spreadsheets.

Indeed. A valid qualification. Its the only word processor where I have

Well that just further proves my point, it wasn't just taking cues
from commercial software, it originally was commercial software.
Sustaining a project with a commercial-style design and scale is
more likely to require donations than other open-source software
projects that perform single "office" tasks in their own, often
more unique, way.

As usual LDO snipped that point I was trying to make from my
earlier post.

Yikes, well OK the codebase went back further before it was
open-sourced. I'm really not that fussed about the specifics of its
history.

I think if you're using software that constantly nags you about donating,
you're using the wrong software.

A software project accepting donations isn't a problem. It's nice to support
things you rely on, not because you need to but because it's a good thing
to do if and when you can. To say people who work on things you don't even
need to pay for don't deserve or get anything because it is supposed to
be "free" is terrible and I will gladly show you the door.

Sure, don't pay a cent to anybody if you don't want to, but saying that
Linux and its software shouldn't accept donations just makes you look
cheap, especially if the only way they are asking is a small donate button
somewhere on their homepage. This isn't "commercialization", people need
money to live.

Or, they could get a job and do any OS development as a hobby and when
they have free time. That is how it should be, pure and for the love of
the ideal, not the money. If they can't bear to do something without
getting paid, concerning Linux distro development, don't do it. Simple.

Of course the same should apply to whatever it is you do for a living.

Linux has been a funded project for decades, more than half its
existence. If you prefer to use hobby platforms, you will have to look
elsewhere.

I feel like you're just entirely trolling at this point. They do it without
getting paid regardless. Most jobs don't pay enough to afford the bills
right now, and perusing their hobby still takes time out of their day. This
isn't free software developers being greedy, it's you being a complete and
utter cheapskate. Sorry, free software does not mean you get to insert your

They don't need to. They need a roof and some food to put in their
stomach. The way they use money for that is just the capitalist way. The
fact that they didn't managed to find a better way to accomplish the
same goal differently tells more about Communists than about communism.
Or maybe not: maybe it tells communism is un unrealistic dream. I don't

The Chinese rulers over the long centuries of Empire tried every mode of
governing but one, egalitarian democracy. The Chinese are as fully human as
any other family of homo sapiens. Because they have pushed for the time
of the Communist regime to improve the national power by education and
they have pulled ahead of Western Democracries in particular the USA where
the efforts of the brightest have resulted in billionaires and a weakened
central government.
All governments seem to have Fascist roots in that they all insist on the
use of violence to control people who resist.
China is a Fascist state as you seem to recognize. The Asians generally
find Westerners rather unrealistic. Maybe a feeling of superiority results.
My experience with Chinese people comes from the late 1950s
when I lived on the local economy on Taiwan for a while. The Chinese
of Taiwan have created a vibrant capitalist democracy since my time there
in MAAG. Oh and I was essentially a nurse, then.

China is socialist and whatever else the Red Army and the Communist
leadership
wants it to be. Payment for work existed in the USSR and other states
because of
the inevitable need for stimulus to work and unequal distribution of
resources.
The leadership in USSR got better goods than the workers in the
factories, mines,
and fields.
Of course that corrupts the Commie byline of "From each according to their
capacities and to each according to their needs". Only in isolated
monastic and
other voluntary associations has true communism existed as in early
Christian
Jerusalem before reorganization of religion along strictly hierarchial
lines.

Socialism in the USA functions to keep the rich very well off and the
poor are ignored currently though we tried to bring the benefits of
capitalist
socialism to the people for a time.

But of course that is just my very humble opinion after watching for
about 80 of my 88 years.
