It was quite a clever feature, which I think ended up widely
misunderstood. Otherwise more architectures would have copied it.
The reason is, so that if the loop count was zero, you could just
fall out of the loop automatically, without having to do an explicit
test for that case.
Example skeleton loop: (remember, the loop count was only 16 bits):
move.w «loop-count», dN ; dN = some convenient d-register
bra loop_bottom
loop_top:
... body of loop ...
loop_bottom:
dbra dN, loop_top
... here on loop end ...
Notice this will loop exactly «loop-count» times, even if «loop-count»
is zero.
If you want a 32-bit loop count, it only took a few more instructions:
move.l «loop-count», dN
bra loop_bottom
loop_top1:
swap dN
loop_top2:
... body of loop ...
loop_bottom:
dbra dN, loop_top2
swap dN
dbra dN, loop_top1
... here on loop end ...
(This is all from memory, it’s been a long while since I wrote any
68000-family assembler.)

Exxon had bought Zilog and IBM was in a pissing contest with Exxon so that was out. Motorola couldn't come up with 68008 parts that would work with the cheap 8 bit peripherals. IBM had used the 8085 in the System 23 successor to the 5100 series so had some familiarity with Intel. Intel saw the 8088/8086 as an interim solution while they developed the iAPX 432. The 432 was an utter failure so here we are today.

It's a perennial debate between the Commodore and Spectrum partisans, yep. Z80 systems frequently ran at higher clock rates, but equivalent instructions were around twice as long (IIRC part of it was that its ALU was 4-bit internally.) On the other hand, there's less "register pressure" on the Z80. On the other other hand, most of the registers are just dance partners for the accumulator and/or pointers for load/ store, etc. etc., da capo ad nauseam. (The 6502 did have versions up to 3-4 MHz even in its original form, IIRC, but of course that doesn't mean vendors of home computers back in the day actually *ran* things that fast. It got a 16-bit upgrade in the form of the 65C816, as well, but by that time personal computers were already moving towards 32-bit architectures...) Suffice to say, no matter which you're working with, creative thinking and a comprehensive knowledge of the instruction set go a long way. > The m6809 was a nice chip too, but again Motorola never got the PRICE > down fast enough so it got lost in the crowd. They were all GOOD CHIPS - and what you could do with one you could do with the others. Z80s got kind of stuck in the 'business' realm, but COULD serve well for home PCs too. The 65HC was alas 'too late'. By then the m68000 and I86/88 were arriving. The 68000s were a joy to work with. Read somewhere that something about the design precluded moving up the speed ladder as much or as fast as Intel. Were also more expensive. The best thing to come out of the 6809 was OS-9 ... RTOS with a sort of UNIX-ish feel. Used to run it on a CoCo. I think you can still buy OS-9, but not sure there's any 6809-ish hardware to run it on anymore outside of E-Bay. Emulators running on Linux might work.

The 68k was the final flourish of assembler-friendly CISC design - very pleasant to work with, but its plethora of addressing modes, IIRC, was one of the main things that kept it from keeping up in the Great Mega- hertz Race. The Coldfire spinoff architecture dropped some of the more exotic stuff and was able to rally for a bit, but Motorola had already moved on to PowerPC for PC-class processors by that point.

They were caused by a program of mine that used DDEML for inter-program communication. The whole box would die, which we thought was novel for an operating system that was supposed to be unkillable (at least in comparison with 95/98). I never did find a way to make DDEML run reliably, although I did manage to "improve" my program so that it would take down NT immediately rather than intermittently. I think I still have it around somewhere, under the name "NTkiller". Since DDEML proved unusable for interprocess communication, I tried various other methods, from shared memory to WM_COPYDATA messages. Eventually I went to sockets, where I happily am today. (I love being > able to test my programs with telnet.) We used shared memory and message queues but that was with the NutCracker runtime that provided POSIX capabilities on Windows. At one point I looked at MSMQ but it was heavy compared to POSIX. I've played around with MQTT and it reminds me of the MS version.

Used it for years. Have it as a VM somewhere. Winders, despite corporate claims, has been a cesspool of old code/ideas and they keep making it WORSE. The 'new and improved' security shit was the final nail so far as I was concerned, it became kind of unusable for a variety of purposes. WinServer ... not nearly as great as advertised. If you want scary, check their 'security' notices. ENDLESS flaws - a lot seem to be due to un-improved code from the 90s, easy buffer overflows. They'll only fix the EXACT problem when it arises, leaving 9999 still to come. UNIX/Linux was always the Better Idea. Moved all my servers, even personal desktop, over to that as soon as practical (like when Linux came on a bunch of floppies). Unfortunately the rest of the staff just could NOT give up their wunnerful Winders - so had to DEAL with all the bullshit for decades. Only ONE other guy there who liked Linux - but he wasn't good enough to take over as IT Guy. NEW IT Guy - went Full M$ ...... oh well, not my problem anymore. Wait until Kim makes all that go away .........

QUAKE ... it was mostly BLACK SCREEN shit, why bother having a monitor ??? Still have DUKE stashed away somewhere, runs in DOSBox. Lots of user-created episodes too. For one I had to write a 256 bit binary-2-decimal calculator :-) DOOM-1 ... the droning music and pouncing monsters ... gave me PTSD. Same for a number of people I knew. Got into your head. Heard the mil adapted it for commando training because of that - get the troops KEYED UP. Remember I kept reaching for my "shotgun" when there were sudden events for awhile .... PTSD. D2 didn't do that. > Windows 95 helped, but as far as I understand it, it really was meant > for corporate environments more than the home on the technical side; the > rest was just marketing. > > The social phenomenon of people building their own home computers, then > gathering together to connect them with a LAN, all in order to play DOOM > shouldn't be underestimated. It was an important milestone - and boosted the development of a lot of shit. "Games" are, unto themselves, trivial. However the tech/knowledge to do them well drove a lot of tech. A *large* market segment demanded the 'better game computer', so .... NVidia came out of that. Now it's a zillion dollar concern smack in the middle of 'AI'. > Side note: there's a marketing book called /Guerilla Marketing/ that > touches upon this subject. > > > Best wishes, and happy victories in DOOM! > > [1] And indeed would be surprised it wasn't a significant factor.
