Well, not exactly; no amount of native business software will help if there is some particular CP/M application that you need. I had a II+ clone with an 80 column card and Z-80 card; I kicked into CP/M for running Wordstar, for my 6th through 8th or 9th grade homework. CP/M was a long LONG time ago. Good system but LONG ago. > I had a II+ clone with an 80 column card and Z-80 card; I kicked into > CP/M for running Wordstar, for my 6th through 8th or 9th grade homework. > Printed using an Epson FX-100. WordStar was great - 'cutting edge' at the time. Anyway though, the Z-80 days are LONG gone. Kind of a pity ! Good stuff for minimal CPU. DOS was better by making most of the PIP stuff "live". Noticed on Amazon that you CAN buy Z-80, or Z-80-like, computer cards. Will run CP/M-80. Not exactly plug-n-play though. Likely native Z-80 stuff CAN be had on e-Bay however. The Tandy biz lines were good.

Good stuff for minimal CPU. I'm partial to the 6502 myself, but it certainly wasn't bad. As with most 8-bitters, it wasn't very orthogonal, but it had a surprisingly roomy register file; the ability to quick-switch to an alternate set for fast interrupt response was particularly nice.

Reminds > me, I need to get back to putting together the 65C02 board for RC2014 > that I picked up a while ago... Nothing wrong with the 6502 at all. Meant as an 'improved' version of the m6800 by some of the people who made the 6800. The big trick was that it was much CHEAPER to make than the 6800 series. Not sure we'd have had the first wave of PCs without the affordable chip. Alas I don't remember any 6502s that were clocked much over 1mhz - while the Z-80s could run at four. MIGHT be that the Z-80 required more cycles per instruction though, reducing that advantage - somebody here knows ..... I think the Z-80 needed twice as many clocks. Anyway, 16/32 bit CPUs were already in the pipeline and users needed higher performance and more mem so they could do higher-rez graphics. The 8-bit chips may have started-off things but couldn't cope with WHAT they'd started. The m6809 was a nice chip too, but again Motorola never got the PRICE down fast enough so it got lost in the crowd.

That was the case The 6502 was in general a faster chip. In many ways the Z80/8080 owed its success to Gary Kildall's CP/M And it proved a more upgradeable architecture than the 6502. But ultimately IBM and Microsoft made the rather shit 8086 the future, rather than the Z8000, or 68000. -- Truth welcomes investigation because truth knows investigation will lead to converts. It is deception that uses all the other techniques.

The 68000 had a beautiful assembler. Or rather, a beautiful instruction set.

I wrote one for the Amiga. I started from an article in Dr. Dobb's, then added things like branch optimization, a macro processor, and a cross- reference listing. Plus, of course, Amiga-format object code output. Matt Dillon combined it with his C compiler to create DICE, Dillon's Integrated C Environment. I tested the macro processor with a port of that recursive Towers of Hanoi macro that I mentioned elsewhere. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. In theory it's harder to set up Big for a CPU, but the comprehension issues still favor Big. The "AI"s ... they may eventually come to favor Small for their own designs.

It is if you insist on string comparison and integer comparison being identical or being able to read digits left to right and put them in increasing memory addresses. In 2001, while working on my MS, the OOP class required a term project based on Squeak, an implementation of Smalltalk. To save travel time, I wanted to do the project on my Alpha machine at home rather than on the hardware at the grad school. However, Squeak was not yet ported to the Alpha. The C code level of the Squeak program treated everything as if it were a 32-bit int. The same memory address would be used to store or load a pointer and load or store a 32-bit int. Because Alpha was little endian, it was relatively easy to port Squeak to run on the Alpha, and I completed the term project. That could not have been done on a big endian machine, because when the Squeak C code stored a pointer to memory and then used the same memory address to load it as a 32-bit int, a big-endian machine would have returned the most significant half, not the least significant half. One of the related things I had to do was to set a 'personality' flag so that the Squeak program would run as if it were constrained to a 32-bit address space, which kept the most significant half of a 64-bit pointer stuck as zero. -- Robert Riches spamtrap42@jacob21819.net (Yes, that is one of my email addresses.)

Why? At the surface level, because DBcc is a rather bizarrely shaped instruction, with the condition code applying to the whole instruction rather; operating with inverse sense; and branching unless the decrement results in a value of -1 (i.e. 0xFFFF). So there’s _two_ conditional steps (unless the condition is a constant, e.g. the common use of DBF). Page 4-90 in the PRM[1] shows the definition. So there’s several things to explain. I don’t have access to the thinking of the designers, but I think the following are plausible explanations: 1) The whole-instruction conditionality allows for early exits from loops (depending of course how they are structured). So you get two checks for a single instruction. 2) Using 0xFFFF for the sentinel value comes, microarchitecturally, ‘for free’ because it just means checking the carry out from the decrement, which is 1 in precisely the situation where the decrement reaches -1. Using 0 as the sentintel would mean testing the whole result value. 3) The inverse sense of the conditional. The PRM explains this one in terms of ‘UNTIL’ loops, which were perhaps more popular in the programming languages of the time than they are today. Mmm. I don't remember. A flag went up?
