I recall I've used (on a Siemens mainframe) XEDIT on IBM's VM/CMS, but all I remember (no details) is that I liked it back these days. On the same mainframe we could also run under the VM a UTS (a Unix from Amdahl) which (of course) came with Vi as a full-screen visual editor. So I cannot see why one would think that full-screen editors would somehow not be possible. For the editing on the terminal there wasn't an allocation of the mainframe CPU(s) necessary, it was basically all handled by the peripheral devices of the mainframe architecture, IIRC. Janis

No, the terminal handles that internally. You update the full 80x24 screen in place, then transmit the entire page. Burroughs terminals even supported multiple pages. DAGS CANDE.

I violently disagree. Full screen editors provide instant response to most operations: Move the cursor around, add, delete, and change text. There's only a delay when you're done editing that screen and want to move on to something else. On a well-tuned system this is a slight delay. It just occurred to me that I'm typing this text into a mail app which is basically the same thing. I can edit all I want, and then press SEND when I'm done. Maybe it's my mainframe background, but I think having "the computer" respond instantly to every keystroke is just stupid.

On a well-tuned system this is a slight delay. IIRC, the HP system I used in a lab in the late 1980s had a monitor where you would edit until the screen had what you wanted, then press a key to send it to the minicomputer. > It just occurred to me that I'm typing this text into a mail app which > is basically the same thing. Yes, but note that "the computer" was written in quotes. That's why I interpreted it (in the sense of most valuations in the thread) that he wants to express that the main CPU of a mainframe shouldn't be engaged in a response to "every keystroke". The terminal would certainly do all the necessary instant response. Or, with his analogon of a news client, while typing text the news server is not involved until you hit "Send" but you still see the effects your text writing/editing instantly. Janis

I can understand that. The overhead involved with dealing with every character coming in from multiple terminals can be considerable. Given the CPU power we had back in the day (maybe 130 KIPS for a small-to-middling mainframe), it would bring the machine to its knees. > I demand instant response! Given typical mainframe protocols of the day (bisync, half-duplex, multidropped terminals that get polled maybe once a second), you're not going to get that even if you had all the CPU power in the world. I remember reading about an experiment done in an IBM shop where they shoveled in enough hardware and tweaked the protocols so that terminal users got sub-second response time. Apparently it increased throughput even more than one would expect by just scaling the response time - users could develop a rhythm and not have their minds wander while waiting for a response. On the other side of the coin, someone at Univac decided that the key to productivity was not so much a quick response time as a consistent one - which led to their system inserting delays if a response was ready too soon. :-p -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. Some websites, I can name Facebook for an example, will put so much JavaScript in the text editor, that you can wait for quite a few seconds before the text starts to show up. This is the major reason I simply deleted my FB acc- ount. Zuckerberg is not going to pay for a new computer -- not for me -- and there were only a handful of websites that did this; I also del- eted at least one more account for the same reason. Now, some people may think this is /OK/, and I should just not be poor and afford a new computer -- or change my operating system from Windows 10; or use another browser -- but I take the stand that Zuckerberg is not paying for my power bill either, and having a website or an appli- cation that eats my battery charge visibly is not welcome. These situations persist because people have been accustomed to accept this as /normal/. I keep maintaining this is not normal behaviour on the part of regular websites or applications. After all, Visual Studio Code infamously used 13% CPU for blinking the cursor. https://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/612v99/vs_code_uses_13_cpu_when_idle_due_to_blinking/ Thank you for coming to my inefficiency rant in alt.folklore.computers! -- Johann | email: invalid -> com | http://www.myrkraverk.com/blog/ I'm not from the Internet, I just work there. | via Easynews.com https://bsky.app/profile/myrkraverk.bsky.social | for ( ;; ) _:; Federated at https://fed.brid.gy/bsky/myrkraverk.bsky.social

I got in serious trouble for this, because the process scheduler assumed that 500 ms was "a long time", and a program that was going to wait for a long time should be swapped out of memory. -- Lars Poulsen - an old geek in Santa Barbara, California

It is a long time :) For example if you click on a button and there is no perceptible change for 500 ms the users will complain about the program being slow.

There's actually standards and best practices for that investigated in surveys; accepted upper limits for interactive activities typically vary in about the range of 100-300 ms. Anything above that is usually perceived as extremely disturbing a continuous activity. (These limits had been our landmarks, what we needed to achieve and guarantee in our client software development 30+ years ago. - Of course we strived for minimum latency.) Janis PS: It's beyond me why one would artificially add 500-1000 ms delays (as had been reported here), and who would actually accept that. But maybe that was just a joke (that I missed), or a hilarious myth.

Many people don't have a good feeling for time units under one second although they constantly are doing performing actions in milliseconds. A shot timer is used in pistol competitions. It's nothing complicated, a microphone and circuitry capable of measuring time. You could cook one up with an Arduino. A competent marksman, not a first rank shooter, is placing shots on target in the 200 ms range. In that time period you are aware of the ejected brass flying off, the front sight falling back into alignment with the rear sight and target, and squeezing the trigger. Catching the egg you accidentally knocked off the counter probably takes a bit longer since you weren't anticipating it but most people, other than those sitting at a traffic light when it turns green, react in well under a second.

I remember this, too: it was one of the first experiments into human-factors aspects of computer systems. And from IBM, too: the maker of systems that were not exactly famous for a lot of thought going into their human-factors aspects ... > On the other side of the coin, someone at Univac decided that the > key to productivity was not so much a quick response time as a > consistent one - which led to their system inserting delays if a > response was ready too soon. :-p And here’s another tale: this was probably from the very earliest days of computers, but the story I remember reading involves users entering a query, and how long it took to get back a response. Apparently, if the response came back *too* quickly, the users felt that the computer somehow wasn’t treating their question with the importance it deserved.

I wrote a program that searches a large collection of files for various data. I noticed the same thing: it ran so fast that people weren't taking it seriously. It didn't help that the search parameter screen was too easy to use, either. I guess that in this modern age, where complexity is equated with sophistication, any sign of simplicity or efficiency is suspect. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. That's much the same like people not taking a pair of headphones seriously if they are light; so Beats famously added hidden metal weights to them to create a more premium feel. -- TXR Programming Language: http://nongnu.org/txr Cygnal: Cygwin Native Application Library: http://kylheku.com/cygnal Mastodon: @Kazinator@mstdn.ca

Humans, who dismiss sugges- tions without thought, normally do so as a status symbol: they are more important than you. It isn't about the idea or suggestion being stupid, because then there would be a followup explanation. Follow those experiences up with people who do shoddy work fast, and if the computer is fast too, it /didn't take the time to do things proper- ly/. The machine, as a servant, should never /feel/ more important than the user. Which unfortunately, seems to be more and more real in the age of "A.I." as business owners tend to prefer people who can crank out prompts rather than do the work /by hand/. The /machine/ is now more important than the employee who wields it. Anyway, that's a rant we don't need in alt.folklore.computers. Yep ! Even the old mainframes were "smart" - lots of optimizations that only later migrated down. > The mini people were spending a lot of time building systems which > could efficiently respond to a CPU interrupt on every user keystroke. > Even the thought of that would have filled mainframers with horror. System interrupts PER-KEYSTROKE ??? Horrible ! The "minis" were pretty good all in all, had a definite 'place'. Lots made. Had some experience with the TI-990 minis. Super-funky hardware- based multi-user scheme with RAM-based registers. Hey, good at the time ! I guess you COULD call the PDP-11 a "mini", but imho it didn't have quite the "feel". More like a cut-down mainframe. Good peripheral bus though, you could plug in all kinds of goodies.
