I kind of agree. As a former assembler programmer - at one time it was my first language - I'd like it to be true (although I'm out of the job market), but I can't see it. These days most HLL code is more optimized than a lot of assembler. A good assembler programmer would not make a lot of these optimizations due to lack of readability.

Many instructions only used one or two operands, and the programmer was _encouraged_ to use the unused operand fields in the one and two-operand instructions for temporary (or even permanant) storage.

When reading about interfacing assembly language subroutines to RPG programs, I noted that indicators were stored in one byte as 0x00 for off, and 0xF0 for on. I suspected (but never confirmed) that this would allow code generated by the RPG compiler to stuff the indicator byte into the second byte of a branch instruction, which on a 360-style architecture would change it to either a NOP or a branch. > I know 1401 Autocoder people used to do horrible things like using > part of an instruction as a constant. Somewhere in my archives I have a slim pamphlet - I think it was part of an official IBM series on Autocoder programming - which contained tips and techniques for writing self-modifying code. > 2. Sounds like you were counting on the condition code from the test surviving through the store instruction so that the conditional branch would properly pick it up. IBM macro assembler is about as machine code as COBOL -- If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State. If the 360 assembler didn't support extended branch mnemonics, you could do them with macros - one line in, one line out. I do admit that the other extreme can become hairy. I once saw a recursive macro that solved the Towers of Hanoi. It generated no code; the solution was in the expanded source listing. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. String-based macro languages in general can be pretty hairy.
Towers of Hanoi wouldn’t even be that hard.

They need speed that compilers can not achieve. They have a very good
chap that I happen to know, near retirement, but they need more people:
one good guy and two average can not cope with all the jobs.

Well, I know for a fact that this machine doesn't run any standard OS. I
asked him. Also, the disks do not have a filesystem, either (I also
asked). Of course most of the programmers work in some high level
language, but there are certain critical operations that are optimized
in assembler. I don't remember which, and obviously I'm not going to
quote him breaking confidence. But if anyone is a good programmer in
those machines, in assembler, they are hiring.

Programming like it’s 1975
<https://vinyl-cache.org/docs/9.1/phk/notes.html>:
So what’s wrong with 1975 programming ?
The really short answer is that computers do not have two kinds of
storage anymore.
...
Virtual memory was meant to make it easier to program when data
was larger than the physical memory, but people have still not
caught on.

No, simply that the database is written raw to the disk, dispensing with
a filesystem layer which delays operations.

IBM Macro assembler is practically a high level language, given the scale of macro usage in legacy systems -- Microsoft : the best reason to go to Linux that ever existed.

It fits what I know.
