Nothing “metaphorical” about it. Sending data across a continent in
real-time became commonplace with the coming of ARPAnet. But those
mainframes couldn’t actually connect directly, could they? They had to
go through one of those “IMP” boxes from BBN. And those were built
around ... minicomputers.

That's not the only way to get data across the continent. In
the late '70s our mainframe in Vancouver was driving block-mode
multidropped terminals in Toronto through a leased line at a
blazing 2400 bps. From a software standpoint they looked just
like our local terminals, except that the wires were much longer
and the speed slower. (Our local terminals ran at 9600 bps.)
In those days modems cost about a dollar per bps - that's right,
$2500 for a Bell 202-style modem running synchronously at 2400 bps.
You could get 9600-bps modems, but they were ten grand a pop.
And the leased line wasn't cheap either. As ever, we balanced
price against performance.

I think you misunderstand "mainframes" or at least IBM Mainframes. The
Mainframe never "saw" keystrokes, they were handled in the terminal
controller so there never was any possibility of the dreaded
"type-behind" one saw on an over-loaded VAX.

Because the Mainframe only sees blocks of typing there are fewer
interrupts and less paging so interactive response is generally as good
as or better than a mini.

A good friend rolled out "Office Automation" across a large business.
For the most senior there was All-In-One but he said that just could not
be scaled across the enterprise, so they got IBM PROFS or Office Vision.
Not quite a functional as All-In-One but good response times.

That’s part of what contributed to mainframes having less support
for interactive operation compared to minis.

That’s only if you assume “block mode” operation. Typical mainframe
thinking: more efficient use of the computer, less efficient for the
human user.

Imagine trying to run a full-screen editor that way: it just wouldn’t
work. The app really needed to be able to respond to every keystroke
in order to maintain the necessary level of interactive response.
Minis (and later superminis, like the VAX) had it all over mainframes
in that regard.

Why? I don't need to imagine, I did it all the time. Its not a problem.
The editor generates a screen full of data.
The controller handles most of the character editing so you change the
local buffer which does see every key stroke.
At some point you send the modified screen back to the host.

Personally I prefer the XEDIT the VM/CMS editor to the VMS one, but then
I am more familiar with it.

Neither one had an incremental-search function like the one in Emacs
though, did they? That updates the display in real-time, after every
keystroke, highlighting all the visible matches for the string as
you’ve typed it so far.

Try doing that on a block-mode terminal.

Now try doing it with a regular-expression search ...

Its a bit slower but the XEDIT "all" command shows all lines with a
string. The command remains in the command line so you can quickly
refine your search...

Every day.

Really basic thing: searching for an identifier in its entirety,
not just matching part of an identifier.

E.g. I use “i” quite commonly as a loop index. How to search for that
without matching all the names with the letter “i” in the middle of
them? Simple: use the regexp “\bi\b”.

I'm told that most people do not work directly on a terminal on the

I recall I've used (on a Siemens mainframe) XEDIT on IBM's VM/CMS,
but all I remember (no details) is that I liked it back these days.

On the same mainframe we could also run under the VM a UTS (a Unix
from Amdahl) which (of course) came with Vi as a full-screen visual
editor.

So I cannot see why one would think that full-screen editors would
somehow not be possible. For the editing on the terminal there wasn't
an allocation of the mainframe CPU(s) necessary, it was basically all
handled by the peripheral devices of the mainframe architecture, IIRC.

Did you ever use one? They were far more efficient for the human user,
such as a bank teller or at the airport checkin desk.

Even for a human programmer, they supplied full-screen editing long before
vi was even a gleam in Bill Joy's eye.

Really, just a precursor of the way that the current WWW works.

Don't need to imagine it. Burroughs full-screen editor
worked just fine (albeit a page at a time).

No, the terminal handles that internally. You update the full
80x24 screen in place, then transmit the entire page. Burroughs
terminals even supported multiple pages.

DAGS CANDE.

I violently disagree. Full screen editors provide instant response to
most operations: Move the cursor around, add, delete, and change text.
There's only a delay when you're done editing that screen and want to
move on to something else. On a well-tuned system this is a slight delay.

It just occurred to me that I'm typing this text into a mail app which
is basically the same thing. I can edit all I want, and then press SEND
when I'm done.

Maybe it's my mainframe background, but I think having "the computer"
respond instantly to every keystroke is just stupid.

   System interrupts PER-KEYSTROKE ??? Horrible !

The "minis" were pretty good all in all, had a
definite 'place'. Lots made. Had some experience
with the TI-990 minis. Super-funky hardware-
based multi-user scheme with RAM-based registers.
Hey, good at the time !

I guess you COULD call the PDP-11 a "mini", but
imho it didn't have quite the "feel". More like
a cut-down mainframe. Good peripheral bus though,
you could plug in all kinds of goodies.

Mainframes in the day used minis as "front-end processors"
that offloaded things like keystroke processing from the
main CPU, which could then concentrate on number crunching.

iirc the System 360/30s became satellite processors for the later 360
machines.

Back around 1970 at Princeton I used some 360/20s which were set up as
remote job entry terminals to their 360/91 mainframe, but I can't think
of anyone using a 360/30 as a satellite. Their CPUs were feeble and
their strength was the peripherals, line printers and card read/punch
and one or two disks or tapes.

IBM was happy to sell you an 1130 mini or later Series/1 or
System/7 which would do a better job as a remote system.

For small shops a 360/30 was enough - especially after third
parties started hanging additional memory on them.
