I had many little diesels with carburettors in my youth :-) I wont argue that is an efficient way to run one though. Diesel runaway is not sustained by fuel through the injectors, either -- "It is an established fact to 97% confidence limits that left wing conspirators see right wing conspiracies everywhere"

Modern larger diesels, we mostly think 'direct injection'. However, past, the means to do that properly and with good life, maybe not so great. Obviously you CAN carburate diesel even though it's a bit viscous. WILL work in a large engine. Not IDEAL though. Right NOW ... any tricks to make a diesel run on gasoline without exploding ??? Add-on water-mist unit ? Add x-percent light motor oil ??? Many want to know ! The diesel problem did NOT seem to be foreseen by Trump's people. Can't guess about EVERYTHING alas. The USA can actually make all IT needs, but right now they're trying to sustain Europe and Japan as well and USA doesn't really have enough refining capability. Anyway, no diesel = no civ. All the important stuff runs on diesel - NO viable substitute. Sorry, but a mountain of Chinese batteries won't cut it.

Broadly speaking anything that goes bang when mixed with oxygen and
compressed hard will do. Even coal dust...

Exactly so. Military diesels were (are?) often designed as 'multifuel'
but the downside is they were smokey and low power units.
I THINK modern armies have standardised on a class of fuel(s) that will
run most things including jet engines. But I am not sure.
AI sez:
Key NATO Fuel Codes and Grades
F-34 (JP-8): NATO’s primary military aviation turbine fuel and the
cornerstone of the Single Fuel Policy for land-based aviation and
tactical ground equipment (flash point ≥ 38°C).
F-44 (JP-5): High-flash kerosene fuel designed specifically for
naval aviation and aircraft carrier operations (flash point ≥ 60°C).
F-35 (Jet A-1 Military): Based on Jet A-1 / DEF STAN 91-091
specifications with integrated military additives.
F-54: Standard ground diesel fleets (equivalent to EN 590, cetane ≥
51).
F-76: Marine distillate/diesel fuel used for naval warship engines
(flash point ≥ 60°C).
F-67: Standard military gasoline (equivalent to EN 228 unleaded
gasoline).
F-18: 100LL aviation gasoline
Modern vehicle diesel is shaped to burn clean and not leave too much
soot or other particulates with catalytic converters to burn the
residues. It will have additives to absorb water, additives to stop it
waxing in low temperatures, and additives to clean injectors and
lubricate fuel pumps,
you CAN run a diesel car off heating oil and many people do, for a while...
Ships run off 'bunker fuel'. Heavy fuel oil is a type that is virtually
solid at room temperature - one step up from bitumen - and needs to be
heated before it can be injected.
But the engines are still diesel engines

In the US off road diesel isn't taxed but it is dyed red to potentially deter cheaters. Trump recently allowed the use on the highways. More bullshit since most truck stops might have one off road pump among the 20 regular diesel pumps. The anti-Trump Greek Chorus immediately screamed that using off-road fuel would ruin the truck engines. It's just dye, assholes.

Back in the day we ran 92 octane gasohol on the Transvaal at 5000'
altitude, the engines started knocking the lower down the Drakensbergs
we got. At sea level we tanked up with 98 and revelled in the power
increase. And the return of breathable air.,

Yes. we have the same in the UK, Its called red diesel, You CAN take the
dye out and lots of scumbags do. We filled up with what I am sure was
some at a 'cheap' gas station.
At full throttle the truck bogged down and was trailing white smoke. We
thought we had blown the engine, but when we filled up again it was all
hunky dory again
I think some of the chemistry used to clean the dye was still in the
diesel, Or it was diluted with water.

Modern fuels carry a lot of additives with complex formulas. Cheaper gas have cheaper additives, this is well known. My father worked in a refinery planning things like additives, he could have said precisely what additives have diesel for cars/trucks vs the diesel for agriculture or the diesel for house heating. -- Cheers, Carlos. With a tube connecting the injector pump with the injector. With electronics, you can instead put the pump directly on the injector at the cylinder head, thus not having a high pressure tube, that although it is short, it does introduce a delay. There are diesel motors with a single pump, plus a bank of valves, one per cylinder. Mine was like this. All mechanical, no electronics. That is not how it works AFAIK. There is an (extremely) high pressure pump that pressurised the file line to 3500 psi or thereabouts, and the injectors are simple solenoid valves that open at a precise time, for a precise time, [a precise *number* of times] to let the high pressure fuel into the cylinders. But they do not add *pressure*. There is still a single high pressure fuel pump, All controlled by software linked to knock sensors, crank angle sensors, exhaust gas sensors etc etc -- "It is an established fact to 97% confidence limits that left wing conspirators see right wing conspiracies everywhere"

That part is expensive. And they are using small coils. I suspect they are doing something else more sophisticated. I asked chatgpt. There are two methods. One is having the power electronics inside the coil assembly. The ECU just sends a 5V control pulse. On the other method "The coil itself has no integrated power switch. Yes, you don't want to e.g swing below ground with an N-channel MOSFET. They have their own diodes, but they are fragile. I'd assume a beefy Schottky in there somewhere. Back in the day there would have been too much heat in the transistors to be possible to build it into the coil pack. American cars do quite well. In college I participated in a couple of rallies. The well heeled frat boys had their European sporty cars and I had my '60 Plymouth. You might want to consider why New England is called New England. I cut my teeth on dirt roads and there often were many in the rally route. I don't know about more formal rallies but another advantage of a big American car was having three navigators on board.
