It is not however, the *only* way...in THEORY. It is however almost impossible to control diesel ignition timing if you do not. Model diesel had adjustable compression ratios to fine tune timing and were essentially one speed units. Throttled units did exist, but they tended to run extremely roughly at reduce power -- For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. H.L.Mencken

With a tube connecting the injector pump with the injector. With electronics, you can instead put the pump directly on the injector at the cylinder head, thus not having a high pressure tube, that although it is short, it does introduce a delay. There are diesel motors with a single pump, plus a bank of valves, one per cylinder. Mine was like this. All mechanical, no electronics. A Seat Ibiza, the motor being a Wolkswwagen design, I understand. > The nature of > "compression ignition" used in diesels pretty much mandates this be the > way. That is not how it works AFAIK. There is an (extremely) high pressure pump that pressurised the file line to 3500 psi or thereabouts, and the injectors are simple solenoid valves that open at a precise time, for a precise time, [a precise *number* of times] to let the high pressure fuel into the cylinders. But they do not add *pressure*. There is still a single high pressure fuel pump, All controlled by software linked to knock sensors, crank angle sensors, exhaust gas sensors etc etc -- "It is an established fact to 97% confidence limits that left wing conspirators see right wing conspiracies everywhere"

The Audi I had decided that the plug wires needed replacing about every 15,000 miles. No misfires or other problems leading up to it. You would go out in the morning and it would refuse to start. I carried a spare set. The rudimentary computer probably detected something 0.01 volts out of the parameter range.

I am all for plug and coil combos fed by a LV signal and power I am curious as to what is fed to them. Whether its 12V or a few hundred, Good oile goofle AI sez How It Works Voltage Conversion: The coil acts as a step-up transformer, turning the car's low 12-volt battery supply into a high voltage surge of 20,000 to 50,000+ volts. Magnetic Induction: When the engine computer (ECU or PCM) allows current through the primary winding, it builds a magnetic field around an iron core. When the computer cuts that current, the magnetic field collapses and induces a massive voltage spike in the secondary winding. Direct Firing: Instead of routing power through a mechanical distributor and thick rubber wires, the high voltage fires straight down into the spark plug sitting immediately beneath it So its basically just like a normal coil. run current through it, let that gets shut off fast and the primary scoots up to several hundred volts and te secondary heads for the plug tip at thousands. That means the electronics that drive it, and the wiring, need to be able to handle several hundred volts. Tough things, ECUs.... -- If I had all the money I've spent on drink... ..I'd spend it on drink. Sir Henry (at Rawlinson's End)

That part is expensive. And they are using small coils. I suspect they are doing something else more sophisticated. I asked chatgpt. There are two methods. One is having the power electronics inside the coil assembly. The ECU just sends a 5V control pulse. On the other method "The coil itself has no integrated power switch. The ECU, or a separate ignition module, contains the power transistor that switches several amperes through the primary winding." > > Tough things, ECUs.... > > -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

Yes, you don't want to e.g swing below ground with an N-channel MOSFET. They have their own diodes, but they are fragile. I'd assume a beefy Schottky in there somewhere. Back in the day there would have been too much heat in the transistors to be possible to build it into the coil pack. American cars do quite well. In college I participated in a couple of rallies. The well heeled frat boys had their European sporty cars and I had my '60 Plymouth. You might want to consider why New England is called New England. I cut my teeth on dirt roads and there often were many in the rally route. I don't know about more formal rallies but another advantage of a big American car was having three navigators on board.

Several of my cars have been low with long bonnets (ok, not exactly E-types), my torso is quite long, so I tended to drive with the seat laid flat and far back, but in recent years my back started to complain getting in and out. I had an SUV as a hire car for a week and my back appreciated the difference. In general I dislike big SUVs as most people don't actually need them (myself included). It took me over a year to decide which type of 'compact' SUV to buy, it's so nice to just step in and have the seat naturally be at arse-height, and step out and have the ground naturally be at the level my feet reach. I still haven't got used to the different visibility from the snub nose and slab sides though. > And try to WORK on the packed-in engines ! > Intentional ? That battle was lost many years ago ...

Exiting my Yaris is slightly easier than the AH Sprite I had but I was nimbler 50 years ago. The other drawback is the difficulty finding the thing in a parking lot full of pickups and SUVs or trying to see around them. > I still haven't got used to the different visibility from the snub nose > and slab sides though. I wouldn't call it a snub nose but the hood line drops enough I can't see it. iirc the original Beetle was the same. When parallel parking I tend to leave a little too much room in front since I can't judge it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1957_Chevrolet Now there was a car. The twin shark fins were purely decorative but I used to imagine them as twin machine gun mounts to eliminate offending drivers. Real bumpers too, in case some idiot parked you in.

Drop a nut, it doesn't get to the ground. I had basically the same car, but with just a 1.1 L engine, 42 "horses". They could put 3 engines like that in the same space. So with just one engine there was space for a full litter of kittens and another of dogs, 2 month old, with room to spare. -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

Snowbirds tend to park their rigs for the winter and use a smaller car to get around. In the southwest when spring comes and they want to go back on the road they may have to evict packrats, rattlesnakes, and other tenants. The snakes require some care to extract but are preferable to the damn rats building a nest and chewing on components.

I always like straight engines, all the plugs lined up in a neat row where you could get at them.

My bud had a Nash. Good solid vehicle. We restored the thing. Had spent almost 20 years under a tree. You don't wanna know how we got rid of the bugs. Anyway, big-6 engine. Replaced the rings/bearings and all the relevant gaskets. A few tricks and it started up just FINE. Used for years, then sold and used for many more years. THINK I saw it for sale on an 'antiques' site not so long ago. Indestructible US auto tech. No, not "best", but indestructible. For fun, check the antique auto sites. Amazing what's there, that still RUNS. DO love the early 30s Packards, that swoopy look. Plenty. Big 6s, 8s, even some 12's and 16's. Those were the "above Cadillac" cars. Big potential money-maker, free of charge, use 3-D printing to make custom parts for those ancient vehicles. So long as the original design specs can be had .... Sorry, but they beat a Hyundai straight out. Me ... found the '69 Falcons to be pretty much "ideal" for all purposes. You could kinda climb headfirst into the engine compartment, reach everything.
