He hated small wheels. He had no problem when I bought a Harley at a police auction but he absolutely forbid me from purchasing a Vespa scooter or the like. I've come to the same conclusion. The Rambler was notorious among the parents of teenage girls because of that feature. That wasn't a real problem since the car wasn't a babe magnet. At 16 with a freshly minted license I was eager to drive anything but dreamed of something better. The car gave me a dislike of anything Romney, George, Mitt, or whatever. My father wasn't happy with it either so it was the shortest duration family car. He soon went back to the mainstream with a Dodge.

Another book I read recently was Holly Chism's 'Certified Public Assassin'. The CPAs are legally recognized and able to eliminate scumbags that escaped legal penalties. Of course the charter exempts politicians but that changes. Add that to an AI... The heroine often takes a office temp gig to get close to her target and when asked can truthfully say 'Oh, I'm just a CPA.'

One of my favorite questions, is the "Year Of The Linux Desktop". Where we have statscounter and the error bars are huge. Doing a conventional search, isn't going to help for that one. Having an LLM-AI do a "wet-finger" is better than nothing. It still counts as an estimate, and not necessarily more trustworthy (without cites to back it up). I like presenting some LLM-AI results, for their comedy value. Such as when it writes programs. the machines you don't pay for, can be pretty lazy as helpers. The worst answer I got (the problem given not even looking like a homework problem), was instead of an answer I got "You should do your own homework" :-) I'm pretty proud of that one. Paul

In UK. I don't _think_ US has the two types of licence - I can't speak for other countries. I think a US visitor to UK can legally drive a manual, even if has never done so - for as long as their licence remains valid in the UK (2 or 3 years, I think). Things have come on! When I started driving (1980s), most automatics (in UK) were three-speed, with those on particularly small engines four. A motorcycle endorsement is separate and requires a road test and written exam but that's good forever. I just renewed my license and it's $2 extra. I gave up my commercial license (CDL) long ago and never drove an automatic truck. ATs in trucks have become more common and now if you take your road test with a AT there is a restriction on your license so you can't drive a MT. Someone who only has drive ATs probably won't get far in a 9 speed MT anyway.

More useful. And possibly I'm sure you are right for someone learning to drive, for that licence reason; but there are (or were? Not sure if still) models that turn off the engine whenever the car is stationary for more than a preset short period. they have bigger batteries for all the extra starts, and I think _may_ have regen. braking to help keep it charged - so could be (and no doubt are) called hybrids, but they aren't really, in that there is no electric _propulsion_ involved. [Are those what are/were called "mild > hybrids"?] start-stop system. I had one, and I liked it; an Opel Corsa diesel. It saves some fuel on city traffic. It just stops the motor when you are stopped in neutral. Mine restarted the motor after a few minutes, or of course, when footing the clutch. It is not an hybrid. I saw another model from Peugeot that used a secondary battery for this system. The starter is being used probably 10 times as much as cars that don't stop and start at every light. A mechanic friend pointed out that there is also 10 times as great a probability that you're going to break a tooth on the flywheel. That would get into big bucks. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. Looks like some people have actually been giving this some thought. I guess I've just become too jaded by decades of exposure to shitty software design. I'm saving those references for when I have time to read more of them. I am gratified to see that my 10x estimate is on the money. Looks like my brain's SWAG (scientific wild-assed guess) mechanism is still in good working order. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. AI will make it not only 'worse' but far more incomprehensible. What DOES it do and WHY ? Nobody will KNOW with AI-designed software. It's already beyond most human comprehension. Two or three years ... As for "SWAG" ... nothing new there. It'll just get Even Worse, fast. For fun, and because it was cheap, I bought a CHAT subscription. $20 ... not so bad. Had it do a few fun images - plus a non- blocking server in Python. Haven't fully tested that yet, but LOOKS ok. Not so much different from human-writ examples we can find online. Frankly 'servers' are more traditionally writ in 'C' - and have done some - but for lower-speed stuff Python will do fine. That's all I need now. DO look into 'threaded' and 'dynamically threaded' servers - very highest performance. Not AS easy to follow, but for outward-facing servers with high-volume, still The Best.

I had the car for 8 years, it was ok for that time, which I'd expect, I don't aim to own cars for long enough for them to start going wrong. > A mechanic friend pointed out that there is also 10 times > as great a probability that you're going to break a tooth > on the flywheel. That would get into big bucks. It had a 'normal' pinion starter (i.e. with teeth) but when it did the stop/start trick, it used the alternator as a secondary starter, and the start was much quicker than a cold start, so it turned the engine via the ribbed 'fan' belt, therefore no teeth to break. It had rules for when it would use stop/start (oil temp not too cold, battery charge not too low, aircon not working too hard, etc)
