I have (not today), it works. You can create an image, too:

   cp /dev/sdX image.img

Ah, but that's a SECOND STEP, nothing built
into the 'cp' command. You can also make, then
later check, a checksum on source/dest files.

> and see whether that verifies it?
> (Haven't tried it, just a thought...)

   As said, MORE COMPLICATIONS.

'cp' is kind of stupid. Not BLAMING it, it's
meant to be 'simple', but, well, just sayin'

When billions of bytes are involved, the chance
   of errors increases.

Still think utils like 'Etcher' are best for
creating bootable sticks. They're doing all
the mentioned stuff IN THE BACKGROUND so YOU
don't have to. Recently had a BAD version of
Kali ... generally looked OK, but Etcher found
   problems. Other distros loaded OK.

BUT, the cp to the stick as a 'device' IS very
interesting. Been fooling with Linux since it
came on floppies but never seemed to come across
   this particular trick.

Yes. Maybe. That is the raw disk sectors exposed as a single 'file object'
However cp also wants to add a filename and some permissions. I am not
sure how that would work.

dd if=x.iso of=/dev/sdc is guaranteed to simply transfer the bytes. No
filenames involved

Not a problem, the destination does not support it. Either that, or cp
is aware that the destination is not a filesystem and just copies the bytes.

Well, you can copy an ISO file to the stick,

One more time for the slow: copying an iso to a thumbdrive is the same as
copying a cat video to a thumb drive. In this case I'd downloaded the iso
on the Mint laptop and wanted to move it to the Fedora box to create a VM.
No install from a bootable drive involved.

For the curious, why did I want to do that? With the Verizon MiFi the
older Intel wifi on the Fedora box was slower than shit. The StarLink
router does have an ethernet port that I'm using for the Fedora box. The
rest are on wifi.

The old Mint Broadcom wifi isn't great but speedtest shows 47 Mbps down,
which is adequate for it. The newer devices show the full 100 Mbps.

The WTF not use an EXT4 formatted thumbdrive or USB removable disk?

Or the friggin network.

Even FTP works
You could probably even use some kind of serial protocols over USB.

However very few computers have DVD drives these days. USB boot has
superseded it, I have a fairly large USB spinning rust that I use ...

I remember when 20+ floppies for Red Hat Linux were replaced by one CD.

Then it grew to one DVD. Then the DVD had to be dual layer.

So now it is a Blu-Ray disc.

When we had to find a compatible SoundBlaster 16 sound card, a crazy
expensive Matrox just to get decent display, a discret ethernet adapter
for a driver actualy working ...

No more 'make zImage' for me, thank you very much !

I never thought that the Matrox cards were that expensive. They gave me
crisp, sharp text and just worked. I was even able to re-purpose a
Millenium I card for a DEC Alpha and run RH on it. (RH 4 maybe? I
remember it was a boxed copy that someone gave me.)

Once monitors moved from digital to analog I no longer needed a Matrox
graphics card.

I don't remember much trouble with sound cards, but I think I stuck with
relatively low-end ones from Creative.

I used DEC Tulip NICs and then later Intel clones of those. Then Intel
started doing their own designs and I've pretty much stuck with those
when I need a discrete NIC. (FreeBSD works well with Intel NICs too.)

A number of the old affordable 'monochrome' video
cards produced very GOOD results - crisp sharp text.
Some would do graphics, again sharp (within the
   rez limits of the time).

Still have one or two somewhere - but ISA bus
   alas ......

Oh, is "bus" or "buss" more accurate ? I tend
to use "buss", to differentiate from public
   transport vehicles.

Hmmm ... long back bought a Sanyo 550 PC.
Pretty good. The built-in graphics were
even a bit 'superior' to the IBM cards.
   However, not entirely COMPATIBLE with
the IBM cards. At the time I needed
'compatible'. However you COULD plug in
a compatible adapter and, fiddle with a
few jumper wires, get full IBM compliance.
X-Y-Color by-pixel was required for what
I was working on. No, didn't have the
   cash for a Real IBM.

Is that more due to the mono monitors rather than RGB monitors with
relatively coarse dot-pitch of the time?

Either that or it forced e.g. text with shades of gray for
"anti-aliasing"-like stuff to be rendered crisply. Or was that kind of
font (mis-)rendering technique used only later?
